Phantom Uchu Senkan Yamato Manga by Hijiri Yuki Finally Gets Compiled! Produced by Anno Hideaki
First serialized during the broadcast of Uchu Senkan Yamato (1974), the comic adaptation by Hijiri Yuki that had never been compiled into a physical book is finally getting a tankoubon release. This long-awaited publication is being produced by Anno Hideaki, a passionate fan of the series.
When you think of the comic version of Uchu Senkan Yamato, the most famous is undoubtedly the work by Matsumoto Leiji, who was involved in the anime as director and setting designer. However, in those days, it wasn’t uncommon for different artists to create comic adaptations for various magazines, and thus, several versions of Uchu Senkan Yamato existed.
The “phantom comic adaptation” now receiving its first tankoubon release after 50 years is the work of manga artist Hijiri Yuki. It was serialized in “Gekkan Terebiland” from 1974 to 1975 but had never been compiled into a book, partly because the manuscripts were scattered. This time, the original handwritten manuscripts, which were thought to be missing, were collected. Parts that couldn’t be found were meticulously restored by manga artist Hayase Masato from the magazine pages, truly bringing it back to life, just like the Yamato itself in the story.
The planning and production of this project were handled by Anno Hideaki, who also served as the planner and producer for the “Uchu Senkan Yamato 50th Anniversary All Records Exhibition.”
The comic compilation will be published containing a complete collection of all 6 stories, including 5 main chapters and 1 side story. Furthermore, as a bonus for the publication, the book includes a special interview between Anno Hideaki and Izubuchi Yutaka, as well as Hijiri Yuki‘s unreleased Uchu Senkan Yamato comic adaptation plans. This makes the book a valuable resource for any fan of Uchu Senkan Yamato.
