The official trailer for Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten (Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten) has been released, along with the announcement that the theme song will be performed by FictionJunction, the solo project of composer Yuki Kajiura.
The film is set to open in Japanese theaters on August 28, 2026. It is the long-awaited direct sequel to 2013’s Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Hangyaku no Monogatari (Rebellion).
Background
The original Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica television anime aired in 12 episodes from January 2011. Directed by Akiyuki Shinbou, written by Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus), with original character designs by Ume Aoki and animation by Shaft, the series became a phenomenon for its dark twist on the magical girl genre. Two compilation films were released in 2012, followed by the all-new Rebellion in 2013. Now, fans finally get the next chapter.
Trailer and Theme Song
The newly released trailer features a portion of the theme song titled “Kanata” by FictionJunction. Kajiura, who also composes the film’s score, provided a comment.
“I have been looking forward to Walpurgis no Kaiten for so long. I was overjoyed when the time finally came to create the music, and then I received the offer to do the theme song. There is no greater honor than to weave all the music for this beautiful, nostalgic, bittersweet, and captivating film. I worked on the BGM while excitedly grappling with the script, storyboards, and the incredible moving images, and then the song ‘Kanata.’ I didn’t want it to be a song that simply confirms the story; as a longtime fan of the series, I wanted to send off the girls’ future in a brilliant way, carefully crafting each note. I hope it becomes a color that immerses and enchants everyone in Walpurgis no Kaiten.”
Story Synopsis
The story picks up after the events of Rebellion. In the city of Mitakihara, middle school student Madoka Kaname learns of the existence of magical girls who fight witches. After witnessing the suffering of her friends, she wishes to erase all witches before they are born, becoming the conceptual entity known as the “Law of Cycles.” The world is remade without witches, but instead, “Wraiths” appear. Homura Akemi, carrying Madoka’s final wish, continues to fight the Wraiths while dreaming of the day she will be guided by the Law of Cycles.
However, Homura begins to notice cracks in her daily life. She realizes that Madoka, who should not exist in this world, is present. This world is a fabricated space created by Homura herself, who is turning into a witch, in order to reclaim her days with Madoka. The magical girls unite to thwart Kyubey’s schemes, but in the end, Homura chooses to become a “demon” to prevent losing Madoka, remaking the world once more.
Now, a rumor spreads among the girls of Mitakihara: a “Lizard Phone” grants wishes in exchange for fighting curses. Meanwhile, a girl without a Soul Gem is hunting Wraiths. Homura watches over this distorted world as its ruling demon. But a new presence appears to end this twisted reality: the place where all witches began—Nazuka Sokotsune—and the collective of witches that once tormented Homura—Walpurgisnacht—along with two magical girls seeking the Law of Cycles. They declare, “We will not forgive Akemi Homura.” In a world that has lost the Law of Cycles, the fate of the magical girls begins to turn once more.
