A memorial streaming event honoring the late anime director Satou Tatsuo will begin on July 7, 2026, on the official KING AMUSEMENT CREATIVE YouTube channel. Seven of his representative works will be available for a limited one-week period, starting at 20:00 JST.
Satou Tatsuo was born on July 7, 1964, in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from Waseda University, he joined Ajia-do. He worked as an animator and assistant director before becoming a director in 1989. His first television series as director was Tobe! Isami (1995). He went on to helm numerous iconic titles, most notably Kidou Senkan Nadeshiko (1996), and became an indispensable figure in the world of science fiction anime. Satou passed away on April 24, 2026, at the age of 61 due to liver failure.
The memorial program is designed to celebrate Satou’s immense contributions and to revisit his creative journey through his works. The streaming start date, July 7, coincides with what would have been his 62nd birthday. The lineup includes a mix of sci-fi, school youth dramas, and unique experimental pieces that continue to captivate fans.
The seven titles are:
- Kidou Senkan Nadeshiko (1996) – a landmark sci-fi robot romantic comedy.
- Gekijouban Kidou Senkan Nadeshiko -The prince of darkness- (1998) – winner of the Seiun Award for Best Media.
- Gakuen Senki Muryou (2001) – an original work for which Satou wrote the original story and all scripts.
- Nekojiru-sou (2001) – an ambitious collaboration with Yuasa Masaaki and others.
- Uchuu no Stellvia (2003) – a school youth drama set in space.
- Mouretsu Uchuu Kaizoku (2012) – an SF adventure about a high school girl who inherits the captaincy of a space pirate ship.
- Mouretsu Uchuu Kaizoku ABYSS OF HYPERSPACE -Akuu no Shin’en- (2014) – the theatrical film continuing the TV series story.
