From July 10, 2026, the YURAKUCHO MUSEUM in Tokyo is hosting “Not Just Cute!? Pingu Exhibition” (可愛いだけじゃない!?ピングー展), an immersive experience that invites visitors to see, touch, and enjoy the world of Pingu from new angles. Themed like an amusement park, the exhibition offers a hands-on journey into the beloved clay animation series.

Pingu, the iconic clay-animated penguin, was created by Swiss filmmaker Otmar Gutmann. The first test film for the character was made in 1980, and 2025 marked the 45th anniversary of that milestone. Since 1990, the TV series has aired in over 155 countries and regions, winning hearts worldwide with the warm, humorous adventures of Pingu and his friends.

Exploring the Exhibition
The entrance introduces visitors to Pingu and his companions through detailed panels. Taking time to look closely reveals each character’s charm and the variety of poses they strike. The exhibition also displays rare clay models actually used in the animation production. Though small and simple in appearance, each model is crafted with subtle movements, almost as if they might come to life and speak at any moment.

In addition to the models, storyboards and other production materials are on display, offering a glimpse into the meticulous work behind stop-motion animation.

Interactive Experiences
Several interactive exhibits let visitors step into Pingu’s world. One installation features a tube-shaped microphone: speak into it and your voice comes out sounding like Pingu’s distinctive language. Other activities include a slot machine game with Pingu and friends’ faces, and a fishing game. These playful setups make you feel like you’re playing inside the Pingu universe.

Pingu’s Happenings and More
The “Pingu’s Happenings” section presents doors that, when opened, reveal Pingu caught in various mishaps. The scenes are drawn from episodes that many remember watching with bated breath as children. Particularly vivid is the memory of “Pingu and the Toilet,” where Pingu drinks too much juice and rushes to the bathroom—a moment so relatable it might make you feel the urge yourself.

Elsewhere, a corner collects Pingu’s funny faces, and other displays show him stretched or flattened into unusual shapes. The exhibition also highlights the adventurous spirit of Pingu, his sister Pinga, and their friend Robby, with play areas that spark curiosity. It’s a space that reveals the fun and humor beyond mere cuteness.

Exhibition Shop
After exploring, visitors can browse the shop for a range of Pingu merchandise. Items include adorable plush toys, eco bags, face towels, T-shirts, and other practical goods. Particularly eye-catching are products featuring scenes from the clay animation, such as a clear tote bag that feels perfect for summer. Exhibition-limited items are also available, so take your time choosing.

The “Not Just Cute!? Pingu Exhibition” runs until September 6, 2026. For ticket details and more information, check the official website.
