How Sound and Music Bring the Invisible World of ‘Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari’ to Life – Behind the Scenes with the Sound Director and Composers

The TV anime Super no Ura de Yani Suu Futari (Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You) is currently airing nationwide on TBS’s 28 stations. Now, sound director Yoshida Kouhei and composers Kawano Shin and Aoki Saya have shared exclusive behind-the-scenes stories about how they crafted the audio world of this hit series.

The anime adapts the popular manga by Jishu, which began serialization on Twitter (X) on March 9, 2022, and has sold over 3 million copies. The first episode aired on July 9, 2026, to great反响.

Capturing the “Temperature” of an Invisible World

Yoshida Kouhei, known for his work on Lycoris Recoil and Dungeon Meshi, explained his approach: “I felt a strong affinity for the two contrasting spaces in this story—the invisible fatigue of people working hard in modern society, and the comforting relief of the supermarket that lets them exhale. The distance and word choices are delicately and vividly drawn, which resonated with me.” He focused on “how to embody the ‘temperature of the invisible world’ through sound. In terms of performance, I paid close attention to the distance, temperature, breath, and the air created by the pauses between words.”

Music That Wraps Around Like Smoke

The gentle, adult drama is underscored by music from Kawano Shin (Ossan’s Love series, Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu) and Aoki Saya (Lion no Kakurega, Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta… X).

Kawano said, “What I wanted to cherish was the time and atmosphere of the two characters in the smoking area behind the supermarket. I hoped the music could accompany and drift around their conversations like cigarette smoke.” Aoki added, “I worked to ensure that the unique atmosphere between Sasaki and Tayama from the original manga was not lost in the anime. My tracks focused on expressing character traits, so I aimed to bring out each character’s individuality and cuteness through music.”

Live Instruments for an Adult Vibe

The story follows middle-aged salaryman Sasaki and the mysterious Tayama as they build an indescribable special relationship through mundane conversations at their usual smoking spot. Kawano noted, “I aimed for music that accompanies the quietness of the after-work healing time behind the supermarket at night and the frustration of a distance that never closes. I used live instruments rather than synthesizers to achieve that.” Aoki, who handled the more comedic scenes, said, “I focused on musically exaggerating Sasaki’s slightly playful actions and Tayama’s teasing, making their casual exchanges more heartwarming and charming.”

Voice Acting That Brings the Characters to Life

The main characters are voiced by Satou Takuya (Sasaki) and Hoshiki Seina (Yamada/Tayama). Satou is known for roles in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Idolish7, while Hoshiki is a rising star from Hanairo-san wa Tensei shite mo Kenka ga Shitai and NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE.

Yoshida praised Satou: “It had been a long time since I worked with him, but I felt a sense of awe—he completely transformed his acting style into something different. Sasaki has many good lines, which could easily make him a cool old man, but Satou brought a delicate performance like threading a needle, along with an endearing charm that gently touches the viewer’s heart.”

Regarding Hoshiki, Yoshida said, “This was our first time working together, and I was amazed by her portrayal of Tayama. It’s very difficult to make a character who seems to mock others and appears cheeky without sounding harsh, but Hoshiki went beyond acting and fully became the character.” He also praised her dual role as Yamada and Tayama: “The subtle differentiation between the two personas was masterful. Even when we needed to re-record a single line, we tried to have the other actor present to maintain the live interaction. That atmosphere and temperature are captured on film.”
