TV anime Suupaa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari aired its third episode, titled “Suupaa no Ura de Okuru Futari” (Giving Behind the Supermarket), on July 23, 2026 (Thursday). The episode introduced a new character, store manager Goto, and fans on social media erupted with joy, shouting “Manager is here!!” and “Who are you!?” as the story took another step in the awkward romance between salaryman Sasaki and supermarket employee Tayama.

Suupaa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari is based on the manga by Jinushi, which began serialization on X (formerly Twitter) on March 9, 2022. The first chapter garnered over 280,000 likes, sparking a major buzz, and the series now runs in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan. The story follows 45-year-old worn-out corporate slave Sasaki and 24-year-old slightly eccentric supermarket worker Tayama, who bond over cigarettes at the back entrance of a supermarket. The anime adaptation, which started airing on July 9, 2026, is directed by Suzuki Rihito and Mori Aoi, with animation production by Asahi Production. Sasaki is voiced by Sato Takuya, and Yamada/Tayama is voiced by Hoshiki Seina.

Note: The following contains spoilers for episode 3. Please proceed with caution if you have not watched it.
In this episode, Sasaki is seen buying fabric deodorizer spray, which catches Yamada’s (Tayama’s) attention. She makes the classic “Ikkyu-san” thinking pose—twirling a finger around her head—prompting comments like “Ikkyu-san lol” and “Cute, cute Yamada Ikkyu.” When Sasaki explains he bought the spray because his smoke-hating boss yelled at him for smelling like smoke, Tayama hands him her own deodorizing mist. As Sasaki wonders what it smells like, Tayama offers her neck, saying, “I put it around here, so go ahead.” Sasaki’s face turns bright red in panic, while Tayama enjoys his reaction. Viewers commented: “Showing off collarbone is so lewd!!”, “Tayama is a tease,” and “If I were Sasaki, I’d happily sniff it.”

The next day, Sasaki tries brushing his teeth after smoking and using the deodorizing mist. His colleague Suzuki shows up, initially teasing him for being “too serious,” but when the topic of Suzuki’s wife comes up, his attitude flips instantly. He suddenly uses a cool voice and demands, “Tell me in detail.” Viewers roasted him: “So easy lol”, “He turns into a cool voice when talking about his wife,” and “Isn’t it a problem if a married man brings home an unfamiliar scent? lol”

That night, Yamada (as Tayama) deliberately tells Sasaki at the register, “You smell the same as Tayama-chan.” Sasaki, flustered, replies, “I didn’t ask how much to use… Did I put too much?” with his face bright red. Yamada’s ears also turn red at the unexpected reaction, and social media exploded: “Sasaki-san is so cute!! I’m dead”, “So sly! Unconsciously scary!”, “He tried to tease but got counterattacked”, “Just date already!!”, and “It’s working, it’s working on Sasaki!”

Grateful for Tayama’s advice on scent etiquette, Sasaki buys a gift and heads to the usual smoking spot behind the supermarket. As he nervously peeks in, hoping she’ll be happy, he finds not Tayama but a woman with sharp eyes glaring at him. “New character!!”, “Who are you!?”, “Yani-sui No. 2!?” the internet buzzed. The woman is revealed to be Goto (voiced by Yukinari Toa), the manager of Super S. Sasaki almost gets reported as a suspicious person, and when he frantically explains he’s a friend of Tayama-san, the manager is confused because she knows Yamada (who is actually Tayama in disguise) but not a separate Tayama.

Goto realizes Sasaki always lines up at Yamada’s register and asks, “Isn’t it Yamada, not Tayama?” But Sasaki remains convinced they are two different people. Goto quickly catches on, thinking, “This guy is being played,” and plays along, asking, “So you’re here for a smoke with Tayama tonight?” After Sasaki leaves, Goto scolds Tayama, but Tayama is too absorbed in the gift (a portable ashtray) to care. Goto’s romance-loving side kicks in, and she decides, “This is perfect entertainment for a dull night shift—I’ll leave them alone for a while.” Fans laughed: “What a perceptive manager lol”, “The manager found an interesting romance”, and “She has a great personality lol”
Meanwhile, Sasaki worries that his gift might have gotten Tayama in trouble. He decides to apologize properly and returns to the smoking spot. There, Tayama is gazing at the portable ashtray he gave her. She teases him by pretending it’s stuck, making Sasaki stretch his arm desperately. The heartwarming scene ends with the old man’s arm cramping up.

The next day, Sasaki is seen buying a pain-relief patch at the supermarket. Yamada can’t stop laughing, saying, “Old men… cramps last a long time,” while Sasaki panics. The episode ends with Ono looking at them curiously and Goto sending a sparkling, intense gaze their way.

After the broadcast, Yukinari Toa, who voices Goto, revealed on her X account: “I also voiced Besu (the dog at Goto’s family home).”
Fans were charmed by the episode, commenting: “What is this peaceful world?”, “I want to watch forever”, “Perfect after work”, “Weekly healing, too cute”, and “Another week of precious two.” With Sasaki still unaware that Yamada and Tayama are the same person, viewers are left wondering when he will discover the truth. Will new characters appear after Goto? The fourth episode, titled “Suupaa no Ura de Manabu Hitori” (Learning Alone Behind the Supermarket), is scheduled to air on July 30 (Thursday).
