Get hyped for the upcoming summer anime season! The first episode of “Watashi ga Koibito ni Nareru Wake Nai jan, Muri Muri! (※Muri ja Nakatta!?)”, also known affectionately as “Watanare”, is set to premiere on July 7th, 2025. Ahead of the broadcast, we’re treated to the synopsis and some exciting preview cuts for Episode 1, titled “Koibito to ka, Zettai ni Muri!” (“Being a girlfriend, absolutely impossible!”).

“Watanare” or “Watashi ga Koibito ni Nareru Wake Nai jan, Muri Muri! (※Muri ja Nakatta!?)” is a non-stop girls’ love comedy unfolding in a school setting, featuring a cast of unique and captivating characters. The story follows Amaori Renako, our protagonist who decided to ditch her gloomy, plain middle school self and make a fresh start with a dazzling high school debut. By a stroke of luck, she managed to infiltrate the popular, top-of-the-caste group. However, her true “in-kyara” (introverted character) roots quickly lead her to her limit.
Things get even more complicated when Oosuka Mai, the school’s superstar often called a “supadari” (super darling), confesses her feelings to Renako. This unexpected turn of events leads them to share their worries and problems, sparking the beginning of a secret friendship.
The anime is based on the light novel series currently published by Shueisha’s Dash X Bunko imprint. The original novel even snagged the top spot in the New Work category at the “Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2021” awards (Next Light Novel Award 2021). As of September 2024, the series has surpassed a cumulative total of 500,000 copies sold.
Helming the animation production is studio MOTHER, with Uchinuma Natsumi directing. The series features a talented cast including Nakamura Kanna, Oonishi Saori, Anzai Yukari, Ichinose Kana, Tanaka Takako, and Sagara Mayu.

Episode 1 Synopsis: “Koibito to ka, Zettai ni Muri!”
Amaori Renako, aiming to escape her dull and clumsy middle school days, makes her grand high school debut. She successfully joins the popular group at the top of the school hierarchy, thinking everything is perfect. However, her inherently introverted nature quickly brings her to her breaking point.
