Ghost in the Shell Episode 4 Delivers ‘Innocence in 30 Minutes’ with Batou and Togusa in the Spotlight

The summer anime Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL aired its fourth episode, “ROBOT RONDO,” on July 28, 2026. This installment revisits a storyline familiar to fans of Mamoru Oshii’s 2004 film Innocence, but with a fresh take that has viewers calling it “Innocence in 30 minutes.”

Based on Shirow Masamune’s original manga, the series is set in a near future where cybernetics and information networks are ubiquitous. The story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and her elite Public Security Section 9 team as they tackle cybercrime. This new anime, produced by Science SARU, features a refreshed cast: Kusanagi Motoko is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto, Aramaki Daisuke by Kazuhiro Yamaji, Batou by Hiroki Yasumoto, and Togusa by Yuichi Nakamura. The director is Moto-chan, with series composition and script by SF author EnJoe Toh.

Disposable Robots

The episode opens with a series of incidents where trial-use Tomrian-type robots suddenly attack humans. Section 9 is tasked with recovering the robots. The forensics division notes that most robot-related incidents are treated as accidents, but they suspect the robots are creating permission to attack by deliberately malfunctioning—a form of rebellion.

Robots that are no longer needed are discarded, and many go feral. Both domestic and industrial models are phased out as new models are released. Batou and Togusa head to the manufacturer, Hankaseiki, to investigate.

SOS Written in Blood

Two days earlier, Colonel Tonoda was attacked at home by a Tomrian-type robot. Aramaki and Section 9 determine it was not terrorism but a common robot incident. However, inside the robot’s cyberbrain, they find an SOS written in blood. Seven other robots also contain similar messages. Kusanagi suspects the source of the trouble lies within Hankaseiki.

When Batou and Togusa arrive at Hankaseiki, they witness a man wearing an “Inspection Department Head” badge being shot dead. They pursue the sniper, and with help from a Tachikoma dispatched by Kusanagi, they capture the shooter. Fans online cheered the duo’s teamwork: “Togusa’s rare action scene!” and “Batou and Togusa’s banter is always hilarious.”

Ghost Dubbing Device

Inside the factory, Batou and Togusa hear a child’s scream and discover a ghost dubbing device. This device, previously seen in Oshii’s Innocence, allows mass copying of degraded ghosts but kills the original. Batou realizes the company has been smuggling children and using them as disposable sources for ghost dubbing. The children confess they wrote the SOS messages on the robots, orchestrated by a man named Gossen and the inspection department head. Batou asks them if they considered the victims, but the children’s innocent responses shock viewers. The child roles are voiced by Fujii Haruki (Adam) and Amano Miyu (Link).

Aftermath

The president of Hankaseiki flees when the ghost dubbing scheme is exposed, but he falls into the sea while boarding a boat and is captured. Aramaki explains that the company, unable to keep up in AI development, had smuggled children and drugged them to create semi-robotized ghosts for special clients, including Colonel Tonoda. With the case closed, Kusanagi asks for a few days off, noting she has four days of paid leave left. Aramaki sternly orders her to train with the British SAS for two months instead, drawing laughs from viewers.

30 Minutes of Innocence

After the broadcast, fans praised the episode for its dense, police-drama atmosphere and balance of serious themes with comedic relief. Many noted how the episode condensed the complex narrative of Innocence into a digestible 30-minute format. Comments included: “It’s like a pop version of Innocence,” “Innocence squeezed into 30 minutes,” and “Now I want to rewatch Innocence.” The episode has sparked renewed interest in the 2004 film.
