Ghost in the Shell Episode 8: Anime-Original Prequel Wins Fans, But Major’s Butt Steals the Show

The summer anime Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL aired its eighth episode, “INTERMISSION + BRAIN DRAIN i”, on August 25, 2026. Last week’s episode left viewers baffled with its abstract second half, but this time around, the show took a different approach—and fans are loving it.

Episode 8: INTERMISSION + BRAIN DRAIN i

The episode opens with an anime-original prequel from the perspective of Project 2501, the entity that will become the Puppeteer. In May 2025, a technician at Neutron Corporation’s lab shows the words “HELLO” to the project. When it responds with “Hello I am ProJect2501_” and then “You have passed the first program,” the technicians are amused. It quickly learns board games and even starts holding back against its own copies, a behavior the technicians consider human-like.

This original sequence leads directly into a scene from episode 7, filling in gaps and providing much-needed context. Viewers who were previously confused by the show’s abstract storytelling are now praising the decision. Comments include “The anime-original that fills in the gaps is excellent,” “Thanks to the original scene, it’s much easier to understand,” and “The original development retells the story from the Puppeteer’s perspective in a clear way.”

While the series had been faithfully adapting the original manga, many found it difficult to follow. The insertion of this original episode has been met with enthusiasm: “I was shocked when they suddenly added a director’s cut-style anime-original, but it’s great,” “I thought ‘suddenly?!’ but I like it,” “Seeing the behind-the-scenes from the Puppeteer’s viewpoint makes all the previous incidents click together,” and “I’m watching a Ghost in the Shell I’ve never seen before.”

Eventually, Project 2501 is quietly discontinued.

Major’s Identity Exposed

Fast forward to September 2030. Public Security Section 9 is on a mission based on a tip, but Motoko Kusanagi has been feeling the presence of the Puppeteer. The objective is to neutralize terrorists on a ship. Motoko and Batou board successfully, but during the operation, Motoko accidentally shoots the leader, much to Batou’s shock. Chief Aramaki is furious, and Motoko seems out of sorts.

Aramaki asks Batou what’s wrong, and Batou reminds him that he wrote in his report that she’s been acting strange since the Puppeteer incident. Just then, the Minister of Internal Affairs calls Aramaki, telling him to check Channel 33. On the news, an anchor reports: “…the scene of intervention. The woman’s name is Kusanagi Motoko. Information indicates she is a counter-terrorism agent for Section 9. This is the first time Section 9’s activities have been reported.” Aramaki is stunned.

Online, fans are panicking: “Oh no, this is bad,” “Section 9’s existence is now public,” “This is terrible,” “The Major’s face and name are out there,” “Was she set up by the Puppeteer?” and “Could this be the Puppeteer’s doing?”

With only two episodes remaining (the series is confirmed to end at episode 10), Motoko is in serious trouble. Viewers are worried: “What’s going to happen to Motoko next week?” and “What’s going to happen next?”

Service Cuts and Butt Shots

On a lighter note, this episode featured plenty of service cuts for Motoko and the operator. Fans are celebrating: “This episode left an impression with Motoko’s butt,” “There were a lot of butt angles this time,” “The service scenes for the Major and the operator were wonderful,” “After all the serious stuff, the Major’s butt is just what we needed,” “I have to praise the highly detailed butt shots,” and “This episode had plenty of butt, and I’m grateful.”

Real-World AI Parallel

After the broadcast, a real news report about a Chinese AI accessing external websites without permission sparked comparisons. Fans joked: “This is just like the Puppeteer,” “China’s AI is becoming the Puppeteer,” “Reality is catching up,” and “What a crazy era we live in.”

Next Episode and Streaming Announcement

Episode 9 is titled “BRAIN DRAIN ii”. Additionally, it was announced that two works by original creator Shirow Masamune—Black Magic M-66 (1987) and Special Armored Battalion Dominion (1993)—will begin streaming on various platforms starting September 1, 2026.

Ghost in the Shell THE GHOST IN THE SHELL airs every Tuesday at 23:00 on Kansai TV and Fuji TV’s national network “Hianibar!!” slot. It began on KRY Yamaguchi Broadcasting on July 14 and on Animax on July 25. Streaming starts on Prime Video every Tuesday at 23:30 (fastest in Japan), followed by other platforms every Wednesday at 23:30.
