The special edition of the weekly magazine anan, set for release on September 2, 2026, will feature a cover illustration of Kaname Madoka and Akemi Homura from the brand-new film Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten, which opened in Japanese theaters today, August 28.
The Long-Awaited Return
After the TV series aired in 2011 and the theatrical film “Hangyaku no Monogatari” (Rebellion) in 2013, the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica series returns with a completely new film. Directed by Shinbou Akiyuki, the main staff has reunited to continue the story, which follows Homura after she becomes a demon, watching over Madoka while controlling the world—until a sudden disturbance threatens her daily life.
Stunning New Artwork from Shaft
The cover illustration is a newly drawn piece from animation studio Shaft, created by main animator Kawada Kazuki. It carries over the striking cloud imagery from the film’s key visual, with blue sky and sunlight breaking through to create a dramatic atmosphere. The smiling Madoka in magical girl form and demon-form Homura are depicted against a fresco-like background that adds a divine texture.
Exclusive Interviews and Features
The magazine’s special feature spans eight pages, including a conversation between Madoka’s voice actress Yuuki Aoi and Homura’s voice actress Saitou Chiwa, who have supported the series since the original TV broadcast. Also featured are solo interviews with new cast members Wakayama Shion (as Shichou) and Kurosawa Tomoyo (as Selma Therese). Staff interviews include a discussion between chief director Shinbou Akiyuki and character designer Aoki Ume, plus solo talks with screenwriter Urobuchi Gen and alternate-space designer Gekidan Inu Curry (Dorodogu). The issue also includes a special illustration of Madoka and Homura by Dorodogu, along with a glossary of terms and character introductions to help refresh fans’ memories before the film.
