CS broadcaster Satellite Theater has announced a special programming block titled “Rewind the VHS! Our OVA Special,” featuring original video animations (OVAs) scheduled for September and October 2026. The lineup includes nine rare works produced between 1985 and 1999, ranging from anime shorts based on the early works of Meitantei Conan creator Aoyama Gosho to CLAMP’s Rayearth and other genre-defining titles.
Gosho Aoyama Shorts
The September schedule kicks off with two OVA collections that adapt Aoyama Gosho’s short-story manga, produced with the same staff and cast as Meitantei Conan and featuring appearances by Conan characters.
Gosho Aoyama Shorts (1999) brings three episodes: “Chotto Mattete,” the OVA adaptation of Aoyama’s debut work; “Samayou Akai Chou,” which changes the original protagonist Kitakata Yuusaku to Kudou Yuusaku, father of Edogawa Conan; and “Natsu no Santa Claus,” a comedy about a high schooler and an idol set against the 1999 Nostradamus prophecy.
Gosho Aoyama Shorts 2
Gosho Aoyama Shorts 2 (1999) features a three-part lineup: “Tantei George no Mini Mini Daisakusen,” which includes appearances by Meitantei Conan characters; “Play It Again,” a heartwarming story about a grandfather who relives his youth for the love of his grandchild; and the OVA original “Yozora ni Tobitatsu Juu no Wakusei,” where a baby Kudou Shinichi shows glimpses of his future detective genius.

Rayearth (1997) adapts CLAMP’s classic manga Majikku Naito Rayearth with an original story distinct from both the manga and the TV series. Directed by Hirano Toshiki, the OVA sets the three heroines Shidou Hikaru, Ryuuzaki Umi, and Hououji Fuu as third-year middle school students (upgraded from second-year in the manga), and features more stylish renditions of the Mashin and villains.
Vampire Princess Miyu OVA (1988) is a four-episode series directed by Hirano Toshihiro (credited at the time as Hirano Toshihiro), who pioneered the bishoujo horror genre in the OVA format. Alongside character designer and animation director Narumi Yasunari, it became a representative work of the era and later inspired TV series and more in the 1990s.
Tokyo Vice (1988) comes from the team behind the Youtouden series, centered on the Minami-machi Bugyou-sho group. The story follows the L.A. Detective Bureau’s hot-blooded Junpei, the intellectual Akira, the calm heiress Keiko, and Junpei’s younger sister Kumiko—a group of students whose teamwork is unmatched.
October Lineup: Genmu Senki Leda, Virugast, Puttun Make Love, Plastic Little
October brings a diverse set of OVA classics. Genmu Senki Leda (1985) is a heroic fantasy landmark featuring character design and animation direction by Inomata Mutsumi, directed by Yuyama Kunihiko (known for Poketto Monsutaa series) with music by Sagisu Shirou (of Evangelion fame).
Kouryuu Densetsu Virugast (1992) is a fantasy based on a multimedia RPG project. In the alternate dimension of Virugast, a resurrected evil god threatens to plunge the peaceful kingdoms into darkness and fear. The goddess Windine releases eight heroes, including Qui, to fight back.
Puttun Make Love (1987) is a sexy school comedy based on Amemiya Jun’s manga, set at Jouhana Gakuen, an outdated school where male and female students are strictly separated by barbed wire—yet the students are full of youthful energy. The story centers on the mischievous and cute Hagiwara Saori and the feverish boy Sakazaki Yuuji.
Plastic Little (1994) is an SF action OVA directed by Yoshimoto Kinji, who also wrote the original story, with character design and original concept by Urushihara Satoshi. The protagonist is Ilyees, a girl pursued by the military for knowing the startup command for a weapon of mass destruction developed by her father. She is rescued by starship pilot Tita, leading to a dangerous chase across the galaxy.
These nine rare works, produced from 1985 to 1999, offer a nostalgic look back at the golden age of OVAs. Don’t miss this chance to see them on TV.
