To commemorate the 45th anniversary of its theatrical release, Sayonara Galaxy Express 999: Andromeda Terminal Station will be revived across Japan in December 2026 as a 4K remaster. Following the first theatrical film, the second installment based on Matsumoto Reiji’s original story returns to the big screen.
A Journey Beyond the Stars
The film is the second theatrical anime adaptation of Matsumoto Reiji’s work. It follows young Tetsuro Hoshino, who boards the space express 999 once again after Earth remains locked in conflict with mechanized beings. He sets out on an endless cosmic voyage in search of true freedom.
After returning to Earth, Tetsuro receives a message from his former traveling companion, Maetel. He boards the 999 once more, following a mysterious directive. His destination is the Great Dark Nebula in the Andromeda gravitational zone, the heart of the mechanized empire. Together with the conductor, Captain Harlock, and Queen Emeraldas, Tetsuro confronts the empire’s terrifying ambitions.
Building on the first film’s theme of the pursuit of eternal life, Matsumoto Reiji delves deeper into a young man’s journey toward independence and maturity. The story captures the end of youth and the beginning of a new voyage, with intense battles against a star-filled backdrop and a poignant, beautiful farewell to Maetel.
Cast and Staff
The voice cast includes Nozawa Masako, Ikeda Masako, Kimotsuki Kaneta, Inoue Makio, Tajima Reiko, and Tomiyama Kei. The production team brings together Matsumoto Reiji as planner, original creator, and scriptwriter; Rintaro as director; Komatsubara Kazuo as animation director; and Shoji Osamu as music composer. The theme song, “SAYONARA,” is performed by Mary MacGregor.
Screening Details
Sayonara Galaxy Express 999: Andromeda Terminal Station – 4K Remaster is scheduled for a nationwide revival screening in December 2026. Specific release dates and participating theaters will be announced at a later time. Additional commemorative events and original visitor bonuses are also planned.
