Episode 10: Kobata finally steps into the spotlight

In this week’s installment, Sasaki notices the city’s Christmas illuminations and, having no family plans, heads to his usual spot behind the supermarket. A lone mandarin orange rolls to his feet, followed by the sound of someone crying. Looking up, he sees Daigorou and a large man—none other than Kobata, who had previously only appeared in the opening animation. Fans immediately erupted with joy: “He’s finally here!”, “Welcome, Kobata!”, and “The new character appears!”

Still in tears after spilling oranges, Kobata’s clumsiness made an instant impression. Fans quipped about him being a “crybaby ikemen” and wondered if he was already falling for Sasaki’s kindness. He then asks, “Aren’t you going to smoke today?” and the two end up sharing a cigarette. Though Kobata is a talented produce section chief, his fidgety behavior drew laughter, with comments like “He’s too nervous!” and “The chief is a total mess!”

When Sasaki praises Kobata’s dedication to work, Kobata reveals that he’s driven to repay someone who encouraged him long ago. Sasaki vaguely recalls an incident from eight years earlier, shown in Episode 6. That’s when Tayama (Yamada) shows up, clearly jealous, and makes a pointed remark about Sasaki smoking with others. Fans laughed at her obvious reaction, but Sasaki smoothly declares, “The only one I want to have a break with is you.” Tayama’s face lights up, and she excitedly says, “I think it’s good!”—drawing cheers and laughter from viewers.

Goto-manager’s unexpected charm

Later, Kobata is praised by the store manager for achieving the top fruit sales during Christmas. It turns out that the “respected person” he mentioned is none other than Goto, the store manager. Fans were quick to ship them, joking, “Looks like a romance is brewing for the manager!”

Goto, often seen as a “romance-loving oddball,” is revealed to be a super-capable employee who climbed the ranks quickly but later gave up on being a manga artist and working at head office because she couldn’t stand desk work. Kobata once caught her crying in secret, and after a series of clumsy attempts to handle it silently, he finally blurts out that he saw her. She calmly explains she was crying over a manga and jokes, “I don’t kill interesting people.” Fans got a kick out of that line.

When Kobata asks why she would share such a personal secret with him, Goto smiles and says, “You’re enough.” That simple line sent fans into a frenzy, with reactions like “Too attractive!”, “What a handsome move!”, and “Best boss ever!” The romance-loving manager’s stock skyrocketed overnight.

However, some fans missed the usual Sasaki and Tayama moments, with comments like “We need more Tayama!” and “Where’s the flirting this week?”. The good news is that Episode 11, titled “Super no Ura de Mukaeru Koe”, is scheduled to air on September 17.
