The upcoming anime film Doko yori mo Tooi Basho ni Iru Kimi e has released all seven of its character promotional videos in one go. Each video focuses on a different character, offering a deeper look into the personal histories and hidden emotions that shape the story’s central conflicts.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Abe Akiko, published by Shueisha Orange Bunko. The tale follows a group of boys and girls whose wavering feelings and secrets become tangled together, and it gained widespread attention through short videos on TikTok. Wada Junichi, known for directing the HIGH CARD TV anime series, takes the director’s seat. The screenplay is written by Kuwamura Sayaka, whose previous works include Strobe Edge and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish. Character design and chief animation direction are handled by Hechima, who also worked as character designer for Chō Kaguyahime!. Animation production is by TMS Entertainment.
The story is set on Saiki Island, a remote island surrounded by rich nature. On the island lies a place called “Kamikakushi no Irie” (the Hidden Cove). Tsukigase Kazuki, a boy who transfers to a high school on the island after leaving the city, discovers a girl collapsed at that cove one early summer day. The girl, Aika Nanao, says she is from the year 1974. Kazuki and a man named Takatsu, who happens to be present, take her in. As Kazuki begins visiting Nanao after school, he eventually hears an astonishing truth from her—a confession that will set both of their futures in motion.
The newly released PVs dive into each character’s past, contrasting with the bright, refreshing moments of the summer shown in earlier trailers. For example, the PV featuring Tsukigase Kazuki reveals that the boy, called “Prince” for his kindness to everyone, once gave up playing the piano, an activity he had excelled at. The PV for Aika Nanao shows her running through the rain and sinking into water, hinting at the mystery of why she came to a world 50 years later and what she left behind in her own time.
Additional PVs spotlight characters around Kazuki and Nanao, including Ozaki Mikiya, Kazuki’s friend since middle school who is as caring as a nanny or butler; the blunt but reliable Takatsu, who takes responsibility for protecting the unidentified Nanao; and Nishina, the homeroom teacher and Takatsu’s childhood friend. A “Classmates” PV brings together the class president Mishima Tamaki, dorm roommates Aiba Shuji and Yano Aki, and the hostile Suga Yoshiki, who inexplicably directs sharp words at Kazuki. A combined “Character PV” weaves all of these individual videos together into one cohesive look at the cast.
