Shin Oishinbo TV Anime Set for 2027, Casts Azakami Youhei, Sasaki Hitomi, Ootsuka Akio

The manga Oishinbo is returning to television. A new TV anime titled Shin Oishinbo has been confirmed for a 2027 broadcast, 35 years after the previous anime series ended. The production is being handled by Shin-Ei Animation, and the project is described as a complete sequel. The main cast includes Azakami Youhei as Yamaoka Shirou, Sasaki Hitomi as Kurita Yuuko, and Ootsuka Akio as Kaibara Yuuzan. A teaser visual and comments from the cast were also released.

Ootsuka Akio is taking over the role of Kaibara Yuuzan from Ootsuka Chikao, as noted in the announcement, with Ootsuka Akio commenting, ‘Yes, again. I will inherit it.’

Teaser Visual Shows Yamaoka Shirou’s Return

The teaser visual features a large back view of Yamaoka Shirou, with a suit jacket slung over his shoulder and waving in a carefree manner. The pose fits his laid-back, hard-to-pin-down personality, while suggesting his return to the pursuit of the ‘ultimate’ food after 35 years, heightening expectations for the new story.

Oishinbo’s Legacy and the New Story

Oishinbo is a manga by Kariya Tetsu and Hanasaki Akira, with a cumulative circulation exceeding 135 million copies. It has inspired live-action drama and anime adaptations, and is known as an ultimate food manga. In Shin Oishinbo, 35 years after the previous anime ended, the story continues the battle between the ‘Kyuukyoku no Menu’ pursued by Touzai Shimbun and the ‘Shikou no Menu’ led by Kaibara Yuuzan. The new anime keeps the energetic, lively atmosphere of the 1990s while developing new storylines. Dan Ichirou, the young president of Daikensha, appears as the judge of the showdown; his love at first sight for Kurita Yuuko becomes entangled with her frustrating romance with Yamaoka Shirou, deepening the food and drama. The classic that caused social phenomena throughout the Showa and Heisei eras returns in the Reiwa era as a new ‘ultimate’ story.

Main Cast

Yamaoka Shirou (Azakami Youhei): A Touzai Shimbun cultural department reporter, usually lazy, but extremely knowledgeable about food. He is selected to be in charge of the ‘Kyuukyoku no Menu.’ Azakami is known for roles such as Gyro Zeppeli in Steel Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Guel Jeturk in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, bringing a deep low voice and wide acting range.

Kurita Yuuko (Sasaki Hitomi): Also a Touzai Shimbun cultural department reporter, chosen along with Yamaoka for the ‘Kyuukyoku no Menu.’ Sasaki has drawn attention for delicate performances, including Admire Vega in Uma Musume Pretty Derby.

Kaibara Yuuzan (Ootsuka Akio): Yamaoka’s biological father and a peerless gourmet who presides over the strict members-only ultra-high-class restaurant ‘Bishoku Club.’ Ootsuka is known for roles such as Hanma Yuujirou in Baki and Marshall D. Teach in One Piece, as well as foreign film dubbing, captivating audiences with a heavy presence.

Cast Comments

Azakami Youhei (Yamaoka Shirou)

Q1. About your character
He is a lazy, unimpressive man, but he has more passion and aesthetics about food than most, and while he harbors hatred toward Kaibara Yuuzan, he also inherited many things from him. Which aspect is his true nature? I perform each episode as he wanders around looking for tonight’s restaurant. Kurita-san may be his guidepost.

Q2. To fans
For me, who watched the previous TV anime series, I am keenly aware of the size and weight of playing Yamaoka Shirou. Values and aesthetics have been changing since the serialization era. I hope many people will once again savor the charm of this work, just as the ingredients are delicious. Thank you for your support.

Q3. A food commitment or personal rule you will not compromise on
During my rookie days, I had no work and no money, and had to endure many things. Even so, if I thought ‘I want to eat this today!’ I would sink my teeth into it without holding back, even if it meant sacrificing some of my lifestyle. ‘Food’ also nurtures the heart. Actors need a hungry spirit, but ‘eating without holding back’ may be my pride.

Sasaki Hitomi (Kurita Yuuko)

Q1. About your character
At first, I had a strong impression of her as charming and reliable. However, as I performed, there were times she said things that made me want to retort, ‘Wait! That’s naturally a sharp tongue!!’ I feel that side is also one of her charms, living alongside characters with strong personalities.

Q2. To fans
Surrounded by such a stellar cast, what I felt was not nervousness but comfort. Many of them are Oishinbo fans, and we got excited over favorite scenes and lines, and I heard many times that they looked forward to coming every week. It was a recording studio overflowing with Oishinbo love. I am very much looking forward to delivering Shin Oishinbo, which is being made with respect for the original and previous work, to everyone!

Q3. A food commitment or personal rule you will not compromise on
‘I will absolutely eat everything I want to eat.’ When I become curious about food or drinks, wondering what they taste like, or thinking this and this and this look delicious, I cannot help eating them all. I never regret eating too much and am always fully satisfied, so I want to keep eating without giving up on anything!

Ootsuka Akio (Kaibara Yuuzan)

Q1. About your character
Hello, I am Ootsuka Akio. I will play Kaibara Yuuzan. Yes, again. I will inherit it. You all probably think, ‘Again!’ but it is ‘again’! Maybe I should just change my name to Ootsuka Chikao. Anyway, even at the time of broadcast he was a stubborn old man, but watching now, he is amazing. He is such an ‘ore-sama great king’ that it makes you pull back a little. It is a difficult role that must also fight with modern compliance, so I will do my best! Please look forward to it!

Q2. To fans
Oishinbo fans, it’s starting again—Oishinbo!! With a completely new cast, we are all eager! I don’t know how extreme expressions can go, but being extreme is not the goal. If we can preserve the flavor of those days and express modern deliciousness! Watching it will make you hungry!

Q3. A food commitment or personal rule you will not compromise on
Unfortunately… I don’t seem to have any food commitment like ‘it absolutely must be this way.’ It’s more like ‘if anything…’ I like freshly cooked rice, but I also love rice that has sat for a while and the grains have become distinct. There is just one conviction: ‘Delicious food is delicious!’

Special Video Premiere
