SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT TV Anime Confirmed for January 2027, 8 Episodes

The anime SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT will air as a TV anime starting in January 2027. The series will run for eight episodes. Along with the announcement, a new key visual was revealed and a comment arrived from producer ARCH.

The project is based on FromSoftware’s Japanese-style action game SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE, which has won numerous awards around the world. It is a fully hand-drawn 2D animation film. Kutsuna Kenichi, who has led Japan’s animation scene as a web-based animator, serves as director, making his feature directorial debut. Qzil.la handles animation production, while KADOKAWA and ARCH are in charge of production and producing.

The film had a limited three-week theatrical run nationwide starting September 4. Due to its favorable reception, additional screenings will begin sequentially from October 2.

The original game SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION is priced at ￥4,218. Price and stock status are as of the article’s publication.

Story

Set in the Sengoku period, the story takes place beyond a snow-covered mountain pass, in a land called Ashina. Wolf, who was picked up on a battlefield in Ashina, is a master shinobi trained in ninja techniques. The boy he serves, Kuro, is the last descendant of a family carrying a special blood called Ryuuin. The two are lonely master and servant with no one else to depend on.

Kuro’s Ryuuin blood has the power to make people immortal. As Wolf and Kuro flee from Ashina samurai who target that power, they learn that Ryuuin brings a fatal disease called Ryuugai to people as the price of immortality. Kuro searches for a way to cure Ryuugai and learns that it can be achieved at the cost of his own life. After much anguish, he resolves to sever Ryuuin. Meanwhile, Wolf learns of the resolve Kuro had hidden and decides to face a battle full of hardships alone to change Kuro’s fate.

TV Series Adds New Episodes and Cuts

The TV anime airing from January 2027 follows the film’s story while adding many new episodes and new cuts, reconstructing it as an eight-episode series.

The newly released TV anime key visual depicts Wolf and Kuro standing resolutely amid swaying silvergrass, looking ahead beyond their harsh fate. Behind them, powerful enemies yet unseen close in, and the composition, combined with the striking copy “Mayoeba, yabureru,” suggests the arrival of further trials.

Representing the production committee, ARCH commented: “The film SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT went beyond the framework of a three-week limited screening, and expanded screenings have been decided thanks to the support of many people. We sincerely thank everyone who visited the theater. This project started as an eight-episode TV series. However, as production progressed, the strong desire to have the overwhelming visuals and sound experienced first on a theater screen grew, so we held an advance release as an edited film. We apologize for not announcing that the currently screening film is an edited version, and for not informing you about the TV series. The TV series, composed with scenes and cuts not included in the film, will be released weekly as a work with a different experience and appeal while keeping the story depicted in the film as its core. Whether you have seen the film or will encounter this work for the first time through the TV series, please look forward to it.”

TV anime SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT will broadcast from January 2027, with all eight episodes.
