The long-awaited third season of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto begins on October 2, 2026. The anime is based on Hyuuga Natsu’s light novel series, published by Imagica Infos’s Hero Bunko, which has surpassed 57 million copies in cumulative worldwide circulation. Set in the rear palace, the mystery-solving entertainment follows Maomao, a young poison tester who resolves a string of difficult cases. Its sharp heroine, full-fledged mysteries, and exotic worldbuilding have earned it fans across generations and borders.
Season 1 aired from October 2023 to March 2024, and Season 2 ran from January to July 2025.
From the Rear Palace to the Fate of the Nation
Through Season 2, Maomao dealt with numerous incidents as a poison tester in the rear palace. In the early part of Season 3, she leaves the rear palace and returns to her original life as a pharmacist in the pleasure district. Jinshi, meanwhile, publicly reveals that he is the Emperor’s younger brother and decides to step onto the main stage of politics. He must confront the signs of a disaster threatening the country and shoulder the heavy responsibility of the state.
The story expands from the rear palace to the city streets and even neighboring countries. As the characters face turmoil on a national scale, the new developments and the dramatic scaling-up of the narrative are set to be the season’s biggest highlights.

The Disaster Foretold Since Season 2
The key to the signs of disaster threatening the country was already planted in the late part of Season 2.
In Episode 43, “Matsuri,” Maomao and Shisui visit a hidden village. In one scene, Shisui eats locusts and complains that grasshoppers were mixed in. On the surface, it looks like a simple conversation about food, but it can also be read as foreshadowing for Season 3: a sign of the creatures that will devour crops and cause a massive famine. How this small remark grows into a national crisis, and how Maomao becomes involved, will be worth watching. Season 3 Episode 49 is titled “Inago” (Locust).

The Mystery Behind Pai Nyan Nyan’s Supernatural Power
Season 3 is also set to introduce the mysterious fairy Pai Nyan Nyan. She is voiced by Ueda Reina, known for roles such as Tsuyuri Kanao in Demon Slayer and Reze in Chainsaw Man, and her performance is expected to bring out the character’s enigmatic presence.

Officially, Pai Nyan Nyan is described as being “rumored” to read people’s minds and create gold through senjutsu. What stands out, however, is that she has not been definitively stated to be a person with supernatural powers. In this series, events that appear inexplicable have often had other explanations, such as medicine, illness, or human assumptions. That is why viewers should keep asking whether her abilities are truly senjutsu.

How Maomao observes phenomena that are feared as supernatural and unravels them through her own theories is one of the major points to watch.
Jinshi’s Bride Search and His Changing Distance from Maomao
Jinshi’s status as a eunuch in Season 1 and Season 2 becomes a decisive piece of foreshadowing in Season 3. Now that he has appeared on the public stage, the search for a bride and heir is an unavoidable issue. Furthermore, powerful figures from various regions, aiming for the seat of power left open by the political upheaval in Season 2, begin sending their daughters as consort candidates.

The earlier setup of hiding his identity while staying in the rear palace connects to the political schemes swirling behind the glittering selection of consorts. Amid that turbulence, how the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi changes is another must-see element.
In December, the completely original theatrical film Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bouhi no Hihou is also set to open. With the story now larger in scale and the relationship between the two leads shifting, fans can look forward to a new chapter that leads into the winter film.
