Warning: This article contains spoilers for Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Episode 51, "Menbou ga Nakeba."

Episode 51 of the TV anime Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, titled "Menbou ga Nakeba" (If There Is No Bread), aired on October 16, 2026. As the mystery behind the sweets handed out by the fairy began to unravel, viewers found themselves falling for Ukyou, a male servant who steps in to support Maomao.

Based on Hyuuga Natsu’s light novel series, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is a mystery entertainment set in the rear palace, following Maomao, a girl who works as a poison taster and solves difficult cases. The third season began airing in October 2026, shifting the story from the rear palace to the city streets. New trials await Maomao and Jinshi, including signs of a national disaster, a mysterious shrine maiden, and Jinshi’s duties as the emperor’s younger brother.
The cast includes Yuuki Aoi as Maomao, Ootsuka Takeo as Jinshi, Toyonaga Toshiyuki as Rahan, Fujiwara Natsumi as Chou U, Uchiyama Kouki as Rikuson, and Ueda Reina as Byakunyan, among others.
A Harsh Request and a Dying Girl
One morning, a shabby man comes asking Maomao to treat his sick child. His arrogant attitude makes Maomao try to send him away, saying she won’t help if he has no money. Still, she makes him sign a written pledge before going to his home. Fans praised her craftiness, commenting, "That’s what it means to be raised by a shrewd old woman," "She’s so thorough," and "A blood seal on a document you can’t even read is terrifying."
Maomao takes Ukyou with her to the house, where she finds a girl near death. The household is complicated: the mother died after a miscarriage, and the father says he cannot afford to lose any more family. Maomao asks the girl’s older sister what she has been feeding her.
The sister brings out a mysterious sweet, saying she used it to stretch out the rice porridge. It resembles the sweets distributed by the white fairy in Episodes 49 and 50. Viewers reacted with lines like "There it is! Calorie Mate!", "Ah, it’s the bad one," and "Sweet… a sugar candy?"

The sweet contains ergot, a substance also used in abortifacients. Maomao explains that it can cause poor circulation in the limbs, paralysis, necrosis, and hallucinations. Social media was gripped by fear: "Abortifacient! Scary!", "I knew it was a drug…," and "Why are they handing that out?"
Thanks to Maomao and Chou U’s care, the girl recovers. Chou U acts like an older brother, warming viewers’ hearts. Then the older sister appears, apparently beaten by their worthless father.
Maomao coldly asks the battered sister, "Where’s the money?" She tells her that if she has none, she should sell her younger sister to a brothel, adding that some clients prefer quiet women. The harsh reality hit viewers, who commented, "It’s cruel, but she’s right," and "In the end, this is a kind of kindness."

Even after being confronted with those hard words, the sister refuses to give up. "I don’t want to end my life like mud!" she says. Viewers cheered, "Her resolve is making me cry," "What a cool older sister," and "She’s really prepared." Maomao, sharing their admiration, says she prefers people who struggle and fight desperately, and decides to put in a word for her at the Ryokushoukan.
At the same time, Jinshi receives information about a suspicious drug. Fans voiced concern for Jinshi, who still seems exhausted. New details about the mysterious figure Byakunyan and a court lady serving as a medical official set social media buzzing.

In the end, it is Basen, not Jinshi, who brings the illustrated reference collected from the fortress. During the conversation, Hakurei makes a pass at him, and Maomao thinks to herself, "Hakurei Xiaojie, you’re pent up." Fans laughed with comments like "She’s pent up, all right," "Whoa, is she going after a handsome guy?", "If Ri Haku sees this, it’ll be a bloodbath," and "Hang in there, Basen!"
Maomao presses Sazen about the fact that the illustrated reference does not mention locusts. Suspicion arises that the book might have been placed in the coffin of a pharmacist who died during immortality experiments. When Maomao appears with a terrifying expression, clearly thinking about human experimentation, viewers screamed: "Scary, scary, scary!", "Those eyes are dangerous," "Maomao is totally zoned out," and "Stop making that face!"
After Maomao realizes from Sazen’s information that Suirei might know something, the worthless father from the beginning reappears. He cries and wails upon learning that his daughters have abandoned him. Social media gave him no sympathy: "What a worthless father," "Pathetic," "Get out before you get punched," and "He brought this on himself."
Meanwhile, Ata and Suirei receive word that Maomao is coming to visit. Fans were delighted by their return, exclaiming, "Ata-sama!!" and "Her voice is too good." Then Episode 51 came to an end.
Ukyou Steals the Episode
The standout of the episode was Ukyou, one of the male servants. Whether he was coolly supporting Maomao or playing with Chou U, his competence drew praise like "Too capable," "What a good man," and "A reliable guy." Others fell straight into the swamp, saying, "He’s too sweet," "This week’s winner," and "Top-tier favorite."

Episode 51 gradually introduced elements connected to the locust plague and the fairy. Where is the illustrated reference that mentions locusts? Does Suirei know something? The next episode, Episode 52, "Saigo no Issatsu" (The Last Volume), is scheduled to air on October 23, 2026.
