The Event Unfolds
After the screening concluded, the esteemed guests were welcomed onto the stage with a resounding wave of applause from an audience still buzzing with excitement. Upon entering, Nakamura-san, serving as the evening’s emcee, warmly addressed the attendees, asking with a bright smile, “How did everyone enjoy *Dai Yonshou*?” Her words were met with an immediate, thunderous applause, echoing the audience’s undeniable excitement and approval.
Sasha’s Journey to 17
As the remake series now reaches its fourth chapter, the narrative highlights the significant growth of Sasha, who has blossomed into a 17-year-old young woman. Han Megumi-san, who portrays Sasha, conveyed her deep emotion regarding this milestone. “It feels like no time has passed since the last chapter until today, but I am finally able to meet everyone as a 17-year-old Sasha. To all the gentlemen and ladies in the audience, Sasha is truly overwhelmed,” she shared, her voice filled with sentiment. Kuwashima Houko-san, listening intently beside her, wholeheartedly agreed, adding, “It was truly moving to see that little Sasha grow into such a pure and earnest 17-year-old.”
Delving into the complexities of portraying Sasha at this age, Han-san explained, “Although she appears as a 17-year-old, her inner maturity doesn’t quite match her age. This largely stems from the environment in which she grew up for those 17 years. On the other hand, she carries an inherent mission, and prioritizing that mission inevitably leads to conflicts with others. I was very conscious of depicting this delicate balance in her character.”
Unexpected Encounters and Character Dynamics
Kuwashima-san then playfully remarked on the stage greeting itself, “Finally, Alphon and Yuki are on the same stage together… this is quite an incident for me! Maybe it’s a good thing Ono-kun (who plays Kodai Susumu) isn’t here today.” This elicited chuckles from the audience. Furukawa Makoto-san, embodying Alphon, confirmed the amusing dynamic, revealing, “When I mentioned to Ono-san that I’d be appearing on stage with Kuwashima-san, he exclaimed, ‘What?!'” further delighting the crowd.
Furukawa-san offered a deeper look into his character, Alphon. “The story’s scope has expanded even further since the last chapter, and Alphon, in particular, makes some quite mysterious moves,” he noted. “For the true intentions behind his actions, I hope everyone looks forward to the subsequent chapters. However, his motivations are fundamentally consistent with previous *Yamato* antagonists: he acts according to what he believes in. Also, I’ll mention one more thing: Alphon is under immense stress in this chapter!”
He then analyzed the complex relationship between Yuki and Alphon, stating, “For Alphon, the people living on Earth are likely figures of admiration. Among them, Yuki shines the brightest. While he interacts with Yuki based on their assigned roles, I believe there’s a heartfelt desire within him to be by her side.”
Directors’ Vision and Production Insights
Director Yamato-san expressed a visible sense of relief upon the completion of *Dai Yonshou*, saying, “We’ve managed to reach the halfway point with this chapter. We struggled right up to the very last minute to raise the quality, ensuring everyone will enjoy it.” General Director Fukui Harutoshi then interjected, adding a surprising detail, “While it’s the halfway point in terms of chapters, in terms of total production ‘calories,’ we’re probably only about 30% done. It feels like 70% of the caloric expenditure still remains!” This revelation visibly stunned the audience, whose murmurs quickly turned to excited anticipation for the monumental journey that still lies ahead.
General Director Fukui-san further elaborated, “I believe this chapter, among all seven, is the ‘most mellow chapter.'” He explained that *Dai Yonshou* delves into aspects the series hasn’t fully explored before, developing into an ensemble drama that vividly portrays the emotional currents and inner lives of its characters. “From here on, the developments will become much more tumultuous. In that sense, this chapter serves to condense all the ‘mellow components’ that were meant to be spread throughout the entire series,” he revealed, placing *Dai Yonshou*’s unique position within the grand narrative.
A Coincidence of Voices?
During the discussion, Kuwashima-san, with a twinkle in her eye, shared a personal observation. “I’ve always wanted to ask this,” she began. “During the recording, I was either too preoccupied or too nervous to notice, but when I saw Alphon speak in *Dai Nishou*, I was surprised because Kodai-kun came to mind. The timbre of his voice and the quality of the acting were so similar that I thought, ‘Ah, they got me! Yuki is being set up so she can’t dislike Alphon.’ Was the casting planned with this in mind from the beginning?”
However, General Director Fukui-san’s response was unexpected: “It was a complete coincidence. I, too, was surprised when I heard Furukawa-san’s voice.” Director Yamato-san then playfully interjected, “Perhaps it would have been better to say it was intentional,” drawing more laughter from the audience.
The cast revealed that while the full series’ recording has concluded, the final episode was a unique experience, with Ono-san (Kodai Susumu), Furukawa-san, and Kuwashima-san recording together. “Both of them were wearing black clothes, and their hairstyles were so similar that I couldn’t tell who was who. Being sandwiched between those two made for a truly strange feeling,” Kuwashima-san confessed. Furukawa-san, smiling, agreed, “It was so much fun, that situation included. I think we had a great recording session.” Kuwashima-san then spoke with heartfelt sincerity, praising the casting: “Han Megumi-chan’s Sasha wouldn’t be Sasha without Megumi-chan, and Alphon wouldn’t be Alphon without Furukawa-san. It was truly splendid casting.” General Director Fukui-san once again light-heartedly responded, “Well, that was a coincidence.” Nakamura-san, ever the skilled emcee, added, “It was destiny that brought them together,” a sentiment that resonated deeply with all the panelists, who nodded in agreement.
Messages and Themes for the Future
When asked about *Dai Yonshou*’s ending theme, “Hikari no Nami” (Waves of Light), Han-san remarked thoughtfully, “When I received the lyrics, I felt as if Matsui Youhei-san, who wrote them, could see into the future; the lyrics had such incredible detail and resolution. That period was precisely when we were heading into the climax of our recording sessions. This song truly gave me so much. It’s a truly wonderful song.”
General Director Fukui-san further commented on how surprisingly relevant the themes of *Dai Yonshou* have become to contemporary society. “Even we didn’t expect the content of this chapter to align so perfectly with the current world,” he admitted. He emphasized *Yamato*’s enduring legacy: “Since the original series, *Yamato* has always been a work from which we can learn something about the times we live in. For example, I believe we still haven’t fully processed the COVID-19 pandemic within ourselves, but by watching this, we might think, ‘Perhaps this is what it was about,’ or ‘If something similar happens again, what should we be careful of?’ I believe providing such insights is a crucial role of fiction.” He thoughtfully conveyed the profound message embedded within the work.
As the event drew to a close, the cast and directors shared their final heartfelt messages. Han Megumi-san stressed the importance of connection: “This chapter highlights ‘destiny’ and ‘human emotions’ as its key elements. While unseen, I believe that what we humans feel will surely lead us to the future. We don’t know what fate awaits *Yamato* ahead, but no matter what happens, please believe in these feelings and follow us. With ‘Hikari no Nami’ in mind, I sincerely wish for the connection between all of you and *Yamato*.”
Kuwashima-san followed, reminding everyone of the journey still ahead: “We can finally deliver *Dai Yonshou*, but there’s still much more to come. Although all the voice recording is finished, we don’t feel it’s truly over until we see the final chapter completed. The journey continues, so please don’t lose steam and continue to visit the theaters until the very end.”
Furukawa-san urged deep engagement with the story: “The narrative has become even grander, with various intentions intricately intertwined. Therefore, I believe it’s best to re-watch it multiple times and thoroughly digest what everything means. From Alphon’s perspective, *Dai Yonshou* was a chapter that vividly showcased human brilliance and strength. This will continue into the upcoming chapters, but within that, I want to emphasize focusing on the kind of story that unfolds between our characters and the still-mysterious Dezarium, and what missions each character will fulfill. I hope you watch until the very end.”
Director Yamato-san highlighted the chapter’s subtle depth: “Although I mentioned this chapter is a mellow one, compared to other stories, it boasts a greater number of detailed artistic backgrounds and each line of dialogue is distinct within its situation. These elements will hold significant meaning later on, influencing future developments. So, please savor each scene and enjoy it deeply, allowing it to connect to what comes next.”
Finally, General Director Fukui-san addressed the *Yamato* fans in the audience with an exciting teaser: “Something incredible will happen at the end of the next chapter, *Dai Goshou*. In the original *Yamato yo Towa ni* film, there was a surprising trick called ‘Warp Dimension’ (where the screen size shifted from Vista to Cinescope and the sound from mono to stereo mid-screening). While that’s impossible now, something equally surprising will occur. To fully enjoy that, I hope you engrave the contents of *Dai Yonshou* completely into your minds.”
The latest installment in the *Uchuu Senkan Yamato* remake series, *Yamato yo Towa ni REBEL3199 Dai Yonshou Mizuiro no Otome*, is scheduled to begin screenings on October 10, 2025.
