Onomatopoeia Challenge: A Hilarious Struggle to Communicate!

In the “Ono-Hanae: Which one is XX?!” segment, the two voice acting pros put their reputations on the line for a battle of “expressive power,” all while sharing laughs and jokingly worrying, “This isn’t good!” and “This might affect our future jobs!” The first round, the “Onomatopoeia Challenge,” tasked them with conveying as many prompts as possible within one minute using only onomatopoeia and mimetics. Kawase-san, representing the general audience, served as the judge and guesser.

During Hanae-san’s turn, he attempted to describe “tonkotsu ramen” using sounds like “zuru zuru zuru” (slurping), “buhi buhi” (pig sounds, perhaps for pork broth), “kun kun” (sniffing), and “hafu hafu” (blowing on hot food). Despite his efforts, the message didn’t quite get across, leading to a hilarious failure. He then resorted to more direct, almost desperate hints like “ton ton” and “kotsu kotsu” to guide the guesser to the correct answer. This, however, prompted a sharp tsukkomi from Ono-san: “Hold on, that needs deliberation! I’ll allow ‘ton ton,’ but what in the world is ‘kotsu kotsu’?” Hanae-san quickly explained, “It’s the sound of bones clashing when making broth!” Ultimately, he managed only one correct answer, filling the studio with laughter.

Next up, for Ono-san’s challenge, the prompt was “ticket gate.” He tried to convey it with “Pit! Du-du-du-du!” sounds, but it failed to connect. As a last resort, he even performed a train announcement: “The train will arrive shortly~.” Hanae-san’s guess was “Suica” (a common Japanese IC card for trains), resulting in zero correct answers. Hanae-san delivered a tsukkomi, exclaiming, “That’s too little information!” To this, Ono-san dropped his shoulders in comedic despair, asking, “Are you kidding me!? What else was I supposed to do?!”

In a subsequent re-challenge featuring prompts like “toast,” “shamisen,” and “barbecue,” both voice actors scored a dismal zero points, culminating in the onomatopoeia showdown being declared a complete “muddy match” – a hilariously messy deadlock. Both Ono-san and Hanae-san could only manage wry smiles, reflecting, “Is it possible for our hard work to not get through at all?” and “It just didn’t resonate, did it?” Their struggle only served to make the studio erupt in even more laughter.

More Hilarious Expressive Challenges and Oogiri!

Beyond the onomatopoeia fiasco, the episode featured two more amusing segments: “The ‘Did Something Good Happen?’ Face-Off!” which utilized a “Just Right Happy Face Checker,” and the “Let’s Find the Perfect Words for This Emotion Challenge,” where the goal was to articulate specific feelings. In the “Did Something Good Happen?’ Face-Off!”, the AI’s judgments were particularly amusing, delivering comments like “53 points – That’s a ‘grinning idiot’ face, stop it!” and “86 points – What’s so funny?’ face,” which sent the studio into fits of uncontrollable laughter. For the “Let’s Find the Perfect Words for This Emotion Challenge,” the duo was presented with an oogiri-style prompt: “What’s an expression even stronger than ‘I want it so badly I can feel it in my throat’?” This led to a cascade of unique and creative metaphors from both Ono-san and Hanae-san, ultimately transforming the entire “expressive power” battle into a lively oogiri session.
