May 24, 2025 12:05

May 25th is “Tāminētā Day.”

This anniversary originates from the date in 1985 when the movie *Tāminētā* was released in Japan. The android T-800, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, left a significant impact on many viewers.

Androids built in the likeness of humans appear frequently in anime as well. Even with human-like appearances, they might lack emotions, be equipped with various weapons inside their bodies, imitate human behavior out of admiration, or have their non-human identity revealed midway through the story… The portrayal of these characters is incredibly diverse.

With this in mind, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Who is Your Favorite ‘Android’ Character?” for the second consecutive year. We received 135 responses during the survey period from May 15th to May 19th.

The male-to-female ratio was roughly equal. The age demographic was centered around younger respondents, with approximately 30 percent being 19 or under, and about 20 percent in their 20s.

Cold Yet Warm: Androids Learning About the Heart Are Popular!

First Place

Taking the top spot is RuRū Amūru / Kyua Amūru from HUGtto! Purikyua. With approximately 10 percent of the support, she climbed from 3rd place last year.

RuRū is an android from the Kuraiasu Corporation, initially an enemy of the Purikyua. She approaches the protagonist, Nono Hana, to investigate the Purikyua.

Readers commented, “She starts as an enemy, but by meeting Hana, she learns about the human heart and becomes able to transform into Kyua Amūru, the Purikyua of love. Her interactions, especially doing idol activities with elementary school Purikyua Aisaki Emiru, were heartwarming” and “In the movie, she’s hit by an attack that turns her into a child, leading to a misunderstanding that she turned back into a bolt. This kind of scenario unique to an android was amusing.”

Second Place

In second place is Tama from Gintama. Holding approximately 9 percent of the support, she maintains the same ranking for the second year in a row.

Tama was originally a Karakuri doll discarded in a junkyard and now works as an employee at Sunakku Otose. Comments praised her, saying, “Her inorganic tone of voice and delivering boke with a straight face are addictive” and “In the Kintama-hen, while most people forgot about Gin-san, it was impressive that Tama remembered him properly. She also played a reliable role in combat, which was reassuring.” *Gintama*’s spin-off, *3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei*, is also set to begin airing in October.

Third Place

Coming in third is Mihono Bourbon from Uma Musume Puritī Dābī. With around 6 percent support, she made a significant jump from tied for 13th place last year.

Mihono Bourbon is a Uma Musume rumored to be a cyborg because she stoically handles any rigorous training. She gives off a robotic impression as she rarely changes her expression.

In the second season of the TV anime, her stoic dedication to becoming a Sankanshō Uma Musume alongside her trainer was depicted. Among readers, her interactions with Raisu Shawā were particularly well-received and moved many hearts.

Introducing Other Comments!

For Norimaki Arale from Dr. Suranpu Arale-chan, comments included, “Even though she looks like a human girl, she’ll tackle patrol cars and break them, or throw her own head like a ball. Her completely wild, gag-filled antics are the best! It’s no wonder she’s been loved for so long.”

Regarding Clarion from Kōkaku no Pandora, one reader said, “The protagonist, Kōkaku no Nene, is a full-body saibōgu, and Clarion is an android. The interactions between humans and artificial intelligence explore what it means to be human. While she questions the irrational actions of humans, she also shows human-like traits herself, which is adorable.”

For Roboko from Boku to Roboko, a comment was, “Even though she’s a meido robo, she’s completely useless at housework. But she’s incredibly strong when she fights! In the movie, she appeared alongside Roboko from other world lines, singing, dancing, and doing all sorts of wild things and parody.”

And for Roboko from Ninja to Koroshiya no Futari Gurashi, currently airing, a reader voted, “She’s a robot made to resemble the protagonist Satoko, but her personality is completely opposite and she’s super high-spec. It was funny that the Koroshiya Konoha was head over heels for her, and the main story was full of parody too, which made me laugh.”

In this survey, characters who, despite being machines, learn and grow by understanding the human heart were popular. Although the theme was androids, many votes were also cast for characters possessing mechanical elements.
