Which is your favorite Yuri Anime? 3rd Place: Lycoris Recoil, 2nd Place: Yagate Kimi ni Naru, 1st Place is… <2025 Edition>

June’s birth flower is the lily. Wild lilies bloom widely across Japan, their delicate flowers signalling the arrival of early summer. They are cherished as a seasonal word in haiku poetry.

In fiction, “yuri” is also used as a genre name depicting intimate relationships between women. The definition of yuri varies greatly among fans, ranging from works focusing on romantic feelings to stories that carefully portray friendship and bonds, or special feelings that bud between seniors and juniors. The unique charm of each work is a hallmark of the genre.

Therefore, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “What is Your Favorite Yuri Anime?” The survey received 964 responses during the period from June 7th to June 14th.
The gender breakdown was approximately 60 percent male and 40 percent female, with a slight male majority. The age distribution was centered around younger generations, with about 25 percent being 19 or younger and about 35 percent in their 20s.

Comments praising the story’s conclusion were abundant, such as, “Suletta and Miorine initially became partners through the duels, and I was deeply moved by the 24-episode journey where they overcame cruel fate together to finally grasp the simple happiness of returning home to eat together. Just imagining their peaceful everyday life warms my heart,” and “In the first episode, Miorine pulled Suletta’s hand to save her from the battlefield, and in episode 22, Suletta took Miorine’s hand to lead her out of a dark room. After watching until the final episode, you truly understand how important holding hands was for the two of them.”
Many also praised the work’s significance, saying, “This work carefully depicts the intimate relationship between two women from various perspectives: lovers, companions, and family. In the Gundam series, which often features male protagonists, clearly showing the diversity of love felt like a powerful message.”

Rank 2

In second place is Yagate Kimi ni Naru. It received approximately 9 percent support and has held the second spot for two consecutive years.

The psychological portrayal was highly acclaimed, with comments like, “The protagonist who is confessed to by her senior and enters a relationship but struggles to fall in love with them is endearing. It’s a masterpiece that delicately depicts the frustration of wanting to get closer but feeling the distance persist,” and “I related to the process of grappling with the question of ‘What exactly is love?’ and finding an answer. Because the setting is a normal high school, not even a girls’ school, the characters’ internal conflicts feel even more relatable.”
Some also mentioned impressive directing, stating, “I can’t forget the scene in episode 6 where they honestly communicate across the river. The sparkle of the sunset, their reflections in the water, and the depiction of them crossing the stepping stones to approach each other – everything was beautiful and felt cleansing to the soul.” Many comments also expressed hope for a second season.

Rank 3

Third place goes to Lycoris Recoil. With around 7 percent support, the top three titles remain the same as last year.

Appreciation for the unique buddy dynamic and gun action was evident in comments such as, “Chisato and Takina, who have completely opposite personalities and initially couldn’t sync up at all, become perfectly in tune through various incidents – it’s emo! By the latter half, they almost looked like an old married couple (lol),” and “While it’s not a work heavily focused on romance, I love how the two understand each other even without words. It’s great that their trust in each other is subtly shown not only in their daily lives but also during action scenes!” and “Even while being in dangerous assassination missions, it was good to see them ultimately pursuing their own happiness.” The short film Lycoris Recoil Friends are thieves of time. which was released this year, also likely boosted its rank.

■Introducing Other Comments!

For Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou.: “I thought it would be a typical isekai reincarnation story, but it was good how the characters’ forms of love were depicted from various perspectives. The banter between Rei and Claire-sama is also fun, and you just want to cheer them on.”

For Assault Lily BOUQUET: “It’s a fleeting yet beautiful story where upperclassmen and underclassmen form a sister-like contract called ‘Schutzengel’ and confront mysterious giant lifeforms. The dignity of the girls wielding large weapons is also captivating.”
