“Crayon Shin-chan” 35th Anniversary Exhibition Held in Shibuya! A Report on the Charm of Displays and Photo Spots Showcasing the History of the Original Work & Anime♪

The beloved character, Crayon Shin-chan, has captured the hearts of a wide range of generations and continues to be adored by many. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of its original manga serialization, a special exhibition titled “Gensaku 35 Shuunen Kinen Kikakuten Crayon Shin-chan Ora-tachi Zu~tto Otomodachi da Zo” (which can be translated as “Original Work 35th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition Crayon Shin-chan: We’ll Be Friends Forever!”) is currently being held at the Tokyo Anime Center on the 2nd floor of Shibuya MODI until September 28, 2025.

The venue is packed with engaging displays tracing Shin-chan’s journey from his birth to the present day, unique photo spots for unforgettable memories, and exclusive merchandise. It’s truly a space where visitors can immerse themselves in cherished memories spent with Shin-chan. Here at Anime! Anime!, we’re thrilled to report on the must-see highlights and how to best enjoy the exhibition.

A “Shin-chan World” for All Ages to Enjoy!

Upon entering the venue, the first thing that catches your eye is the chronicle display reflecting on the history of the original manga. The journey from its serialization launch in 1990 to the present is laid out year by year. Many visitors will surely feel a wave of nostalgia, remembering “I used to read that back then!” as they metaphorically flip through the pages of time. Additionally, newly drawn illustrations commemorating the 35th anniversary are also on display. Shin-chan and Shiro cuddling together evoke a simple yet deeply heartwarming cuteness. These five fan-must-sees are definitely worth pausing and savoring.

Equally fascinating is the panel introducing the printing process before digitization. This section offers a glimpse into the atmosphere of the production site back then, illustrating the immense effort required to transform color manuscripts into published books. Understanding the behind-the-scenes work that brings the series to readers makes Shin-chan’s world feel even more tangible and intimate.

Furthermore, within the exhibition space, there’s also a spot where you can enjoy movies on a large screen. You’ll undoubtedly find yourself feeling warm and fuzzy as Shin-chan and Shiro’s daily lives unfold with adorable sound effects!

Strike a Pose! Plenty of Photo Spots with Iconic Scenes

As you continue along the route, you’ll discover a corner dedicated to introducing supporting characters from the original manga, alongside photo spots. Many niche characters, some appearing in just a single episode, are also showcased, offering a delightful surprise for core fans and long-time followers of the series. It was a unique display, allowing visitors to recall characters with an “Oh, I know this one!” and enjoy both nostalgia and discovery simultaneously.

At the photo spots featuring original manga panels, you’ll find famous, laugh-out-loud scenes that will make you exclaim, “I know this moment!” These include the familiar scene of Nene-chan Mama using her bunny plushie as a punching bag, and moments of striking a pose with Action Kamen. Why not step into the manga world and enjoy taking pictures in front of your favorite scenes? The exhibition truly shines with its rich display of famous scenes from both the manga and anime, as well as Shin-chan cosplay, allowing visitors to compare the different artistic styles and expressions – a unique delight of this event!

High Quality & Fantastic Prizes from Mini-Games!

Your admission ticket includes one play of a mini-game, an exclusive perk for visitors. You can participate in an original mini-game to play with Shin-chan and Shiro, choosing from two types with different prize lineups. Surprisingly, these mini-games were created from scratch, making them completely original for the exhibition! I personally tried one, and the quality of the production and visuals was incredibly high; I couldn’t stop feeling excited with every moment on screen. If you successfully clear the mini-game, you’ll win an adorable squeeze strap! The squishy texture in hand is just irresistible!

Exclusive 35th Anniversary Special Merchandise

After enjoying the exhibits, make your way to the goods corner. The shop features a wide array of exclusive limited-edition items and previous Crayon Shin-chan merchandise. The limited items include die-cut stickers, acrylic stands, and character drawstring bags, all boasting special designs commemorating the 35th anniversary. Each item is thoughtfully designed for everyday use, making them appealing even to casual fans. Additionally, customers who spend 1,000 yen (tax included) or more on merchandise will receive an original shopper bag as a gift. The shop is accessible even without an admission ticket, so it’s highly recommended for anyone who can’t attend the exhibition but still wants to snag some exclusive goodies.

35 Years of “Memories” with Crayon Shin-chan, All Here

True to its title, “Ora-tachi Zu~tto Otomodachi da Zo!” (We’ll Be Friends Forever!), the exhibition truly served as a place to rekindle “memories with Shin-chan” for generations who have grown up with the series. For young children, it offers fresh discoveries, and for adults, a nostalgic reunion. The ability to enjoy the series together across generations is one of Crayon Shin-chan’s greatest charms.
