Column: “Isekai” – Now a Global Lingua Franca!? A Deep Dive into Its Appeal!

[Text by Sugimoto Hodaka]

Isekai anime has firmly established itself as a distinct genre, gaining recognition overseas to the point where “Isekai” is even listed in the Oxford English Dictionary. While often said to have developed in the 2010s, tracing the roots of its imaginative power reveals that it’s far from a sudden fad; rather, it taps into deep-seated desires within modern society. Let’s unravel the origins and expansion of this captivating genre.

RPG Fantasy as a Fundamental Experience

Isekai anime often features medieval Western-style fantasy worlds of swords and magic. It’s said that this imaginative foundation was significantly influenced by TRPGs (Tabletop Role-Playing Games) imported into Japan during the 70s and 80s, which then led to the unique development of Japanese RPGs.

This imaginative spirit was passed down to various media like light novels and manga, eventually blossoming on the novel submission website “Shousetsuka ni Narou” (Let’s Become a Novelist), which launched in the 2000s. As if to satisfy the “desire for a do-over” felt by many who struggled through difficult times like the Heisei recession, the “isekai tensei” (reincarnation in another world) pattern became firmly established, where protagonists who die in their original world embark on glorious adventures in a new one. As the genre matured, it branched out into many sub-patterns, such as protagonists being exiled from their party after being deemed incompetent, or those who forgo adventure entirely to enjoy a peaceful, “slow life” in their new world.

The 2010s: Isekai Anime Takes Root

Isekai anime truly gained popularity and widespread recognition in mainstream society during the 2010s. Works like Log Horizon (2013), No Game No Life (2014), and Overlord (2015) were adapted into anime, laying the groundwork for the burgeoning boom. Then, two anime adaptations in 2016, Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (often shortened to Re:Zero) and Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (or KonoSuba), proved to be epoch-making titles that firmly established the genre. Re:Zero presented a story where a protagonist reincarnated in an isekai is given a cursed-like ability called “Return by Death,” forcing him to repeatedly confront despairing fates. It showcased that the genre could deliver profound human drama, not just easy catharsis. Conversely, KonoSuba, with its parody-like content, can be seen as a meta-critique of the rapidly growing isekai genre.

The success of these two distinct works, both airing in the same year, led to isekai anime being recognized as a deeply versatile genre, capable of encompassing everything from serious tragedies to high-tension comedies.

The Diversification of Isekai Anime

As “isekai” solidified its position as a genre, numerous subgenres emerged, reflecting the increasingly diverse preferences of modern audiences.

Classic Isekai: These stories typically feature a protagonist granted special skills in an isekai and embarking on an adventure. The flavor of the narrative often changes depending on how overpowered these abilities are. Some tales, like Mushoku Tensei ~Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu~, involve numerous setbacks, while others allow the protagonist to revel in a sense of omnipotence with absolute power. Furthermore, works like Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken even explore themes of coexistence with diverse races.

Villainess Isekai: A subgenre that blossomed for female audiences, “villainess stories” typically portray protagonists who are reincarnated not as the main heroine of an otome game, but as the villainess, and must struggle to avoid defeat or ruin. The series that widely popularized this subgenre was Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite shimatta… (known as HameFura). Its comedic tone, featuring the protagonist Katarina Claes charming both male and female capture targets unintentionally through her naturally kind personality while trying to avert her impending doom, won it immense popularity.

Heartwarming / Slow Life Isekai: The antithesis of classic adventure, these stories revolve around protagonists freed from the hustle and bustle of modern society, enjoying a relaxed “slow life” in a stress-free environment. In Isekai Nonbiri Nouka, the protagonist, after dying young from illness, is granted a healthy body and versatile farming tools, dedicating himself entirely to agriculture in another world.

Reverse Isekai: Reincarnation patterns have also evolved, giving rise to stories like Hataraku Maou-sama!, where characters from an isekai world arrive in modern-day Earth, or Isekai Ojisan, where a person returning from an isekai struggles to adapt to the discrepancies of modern society.

Isekai Anime as a Source of Healing

The widespread appeal of isekai anime likely stems from its direct reflection of modern people’s desires. Whether it’s a story of a protagonist effortlessly dominating with cheat-level skills or a heartwarming slow-life tale, both satisfy the wish for a protagonist who, struggling in their original world, can now live life on their own terms in an isekai.

Another notable characteristic is how eye-catching the concepts are, often more so than complex plots. Combining “isekai” with various elements allows for an infinite generation of story patterns. Since these stories often utilize similar world-building, they don’t require extensive prior knowledge, making them easy to pick up and watch casually. Furthermore, as they often emphasize exhilaration and liberation, narratives rarely delve into truly hopeless scenarios. While stories of overcoming setbacks and difficulties certainly exist, many often see the protagonist’s goals and objectives succeed without undue stress, resulting in works that impose minimal mental burden on the viewer. Thus, isekai anime can be seen as easily accessible for children and serving as a comforting escape for adults.
