What’s Your Favorite “Angel” Character? *Chainsaw Man*’s Tenshi no Akuma Soars to the Top in 2025 Survey Results!
Anime!Anime! once again conducted a reader survey titled “Who is Your Favorite ‘Angel’ Character?” following last year’s poll. We are now announcing the results.
October 4th marks “Tenshi no Hi” (Angel Day) in Japan.
This special day was established by Triumph, famous for its “Tenshi no Bra” lingerie, playing on the Japanese word for angel, “tenshi” (天10, 使4).
Angels, as divine messengers, are a familiar presence in anime. They are depicted in a myriad of ways: sometimes as benevolent guardians bringing happiness, other times as catalysts for trouble, or even as affectionate nicknames for characters with gentle dispositions.
With this in mind, Anime!Anime! once again conducted a reader survey titled “Who is Your Favorite ‘Angel’ Character?” following last year’s poll. We received 424 responses during the survey period from September 26th to October 1st.
The gender ratio was approximately 30 percent male and 70 percent female, indicating a predominant female participation. Regarding age, about 50 percent of respondents were 19 or younger, and 20 percent were in their 20s, showing a strong focus on younger demographics.

Chainsaw Man‘s Tenshi no Akuma Claims Top Spot, Boosted by Theatrical Release!
First Place
The first place goes to Tenshi no Akuma from Chainsaw Man. With approximately 20 percent of the votes, this character leapt from 4th place last year straight to the top!
Tenshi no Akuma is a devil hunter from Public Safety Devil Extermination Special Division 4. Readers were captivated by their unique blend of traits, commenting, “The contradiction of ‘angel x devil’ and the combination of a halo with a suit is just so striking!” and “They have an angelic, gender-neutral appearance, but they’re a devil with the power to absorb the lifespan of anyone they touch.”
Their prominent role in the currently running theatrical film, Chainsaw Man Reze-hen, was a significant factor in their rise in the rankings. One fan even remarked, “I was moved by the deepening relationship with their companion, Hayakawa Aki, and his ultimate decision, which made me a fan after watching the movie.”
Second Place
Securing second place is Mouri Ran from Meitantei Konan. With about 10 percent of the votes, she dropped one spot from her top position last year.
“She’s so kind-hearted, always thinking of others before herself. I was deeply moved by her stance of never abandoning anyone, not even a culprit,” and “Cute, gentle, and strong – she has it all! She’s nothing short of angelic!” These were some of the comments praising her dedicated personality and inherent assertiveness.
Her connection to Vermouth from the Black Organization, who famously calls her “Angel,” also resonated with voters: “It’s iconic how Vermouth from the Black Organization calls her ‘Angel.’ Ran always faces any crisis with such bravery, truly living up to that name.”
Third Place
Coming in third is Tenshi (Tachibana Kanade) from Angel Beats!. Earning about 5 percent of the votes, she climbed into the top 3 from last year’s 5th place.
Tachibana Kanade is a mysterious girl in the afterworld school, known simply as “Angel.” Fans praised her unique charm, saying, “The nickname ‘Angel’ comes to mind before her actual name. Even in the credits, she was listed as Angel,” “Despite her stoic expression and few words, her gentle and naturally innocent side is incredibly cute,” and “The scene of her playing the piano in the opening was beautiful.” This title, celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, continues to captivate audiences. Many readers also highlighted the surprising twists in the story that brought them to tears.
Other Noteworthy Mentions!
For Kujou Tenn from IDOLiSH7, readers commented, “Kujou Tenn, the modern-day angel! His charisma comes from his stoic dedication to being the perfect idol, always presenting an angelic demeanor to his fans.”
Regarding Licht Jekylland Todoroki from SERVAMP -Servamp-, a fan shared, “He carries a backpack with angel wings and declares the iconic line, ‘Because I am an angel.’ That strength of conviction is incredibly cool.”
About Reki from Haibane Renmei, a reader said, “It’s a story about children with halos and grey wings confronting themselves. When I learned the cruel meaning hidden in Reki’s name, I just wanted to embrace her.”
And for Shiratama Mikan from PriPara, votes poured in: “Her best friend, Aroma, is a devil character, so she became an idol angel. She’s a kind, considerate friend, and her birthday is also on October 4th, Angel Day!” This series, with Aikatsu! x PriPara THE MOVIE -Deai no Kiseki!- slated for release, clearly still holds a special place in fans’ hearts.
The 2025 edition of the survey saw angels who are active in battle scenes ranking high. This result suggests that the motif of an “angel” symbolizes not only kindness but also strength.
