Before diving into the narrative, take a moment to appreciate these stunning visuals from the upcoming movie, including fierce battle scenes and captivating character designs by Jin Kim.

About Hateshinaki Scarlett

Revolving around the profound theme of “living,” Hateshinaki Scarlett originated from Director Hosoda Mamoru’s desire to create a robust and powerful film that asks, “What do people live for? I want to explore this grand theme together with the audience now.” The story follows Princess Scarlett, who, after failing to avenge her father, attempts to exact revenge on her arch-nemesis once again in the “Land of the Dead.” Nineteen years after Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time), this shocking new work promises to overturn the established image of Studio Chizu and Director Hosoda’s previous films.

Furthermore, scenes depicting Scarlett fending off assassins sent by Claudius and engaging in fierce swordplay with armored soldiers much larger than herself, demonstrating her overwhelming combat prowess and ability to fight on equal terms, have also been revealed.

Behind the Scenes: Action Choreography

Director Hosoda’s challenging spirit to “attempt completely new animation expressions” has resulted in powerful action scenes intricately woven throughout the film. To bring these to life, Sonumura Kensuke, who previously served as motion coordinator for Bakemono no Ko (The Boy and The Beast) and action director for the live-action Baby Walkure series and the full-CGI Biohazard series, has joined the team as a stunt coordinator. Additionally, Izawa Saori, who participated as a stunt performer in the live-action films Kingdom and Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou The Final / The Beginning, and starred in the Baby Walkure series, is involved as Scarlett’s stunt actress. With leading figures in Japanese action cinema lending their expertise to Scarlett’s battles, anticipation for Director Hosoda’s most intense action sequences ever is at an all-time high.

Hollywood Premiere Event

On October 17, the film’s premiere screening took place at the renowned Chinese Theater in Hollywood, a venue famous for hosting the Academy Awards. Similar to previous premieres held in Venice, Toronto, and New York, a large number of international media and fans gathered in Los Angeles, underscoring the global anticipation for Director Hosoda’s latest work.

Insights from Character Designer Jin Kim

Jin Kim, who designed the characters Scarlett and Hijiri for this film, following his work on Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (Belle), attended the screening and watched the film for the first time. Kim-san, who previously expressed that it was “an absolutely wonderful feeling” to see his designed characters animated in the trailer, excitedly praised the film after the screening: “My expectations were high after watching Director Hosoda’s previous works, but the director did not disappoint. It was made with much more detail than I anticipated, and the characters were so vividly portrayed… it was truly like magic!”

Upon finally meeting after the Q&A session, Director Hosoda rushed to Jin Kim’s side, exchanging a firm and heartfelt handshake. Director Hosoda expressed his gratitude, saying, “We finally met. I learned so much from your vivid, almost living, sketch designs for the characters. Thank you so much!”

Jin Kim-san also revealed the inspiration behind Scarlett’s character design, stating, “When I heard the story from the director, I felt pain, anguish, and sadness from her (Scarlett). I wanted to express those deep emotions through my drawings, so I drew many images of her with sad expressions.” This approach led to a character design significantly different from Belle in the previous film Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime, portraying Scarlett as a “strong protagonist burning with vengeance,” who suppresses her sorrow and fiercely confronts her enemies. Be sure to check out the precious character designs of Scarlett, showcasing her various expressions, which have also been released.
