Pokemon Kyo-gashi: Traditional Japanese Sweets Featuring Beloved Pokemon Characters
Delightful “Pokemon Kyo-gashi” (Kyoto-style traditional sweets) will be released starting Saturday, October 25, 2025. This time, the sweets are inspired by five iconic Pokemon: Pikachu, Hooh, Daatengu, Dooh, and Koiking. Each Pokemon’s unique characteristics have been meticulously brought to life by skilled artisans, transformed into beautiful Jou-namagashi, Fu-yaki, and Higashi.

The Ever-Evolving World of Pocket Monsters
Pocket Monsters, affectionately known as “Pokemon,” became a massive hit with the release of the Game Boy exclusive software Pocket Monsters Aka to Midori (Red and Green) in 1996. From there, it expanded into a beloved global phenomenon, spanning trading card games, TV anime, and films.
The TV anime series, which began airing in 1997, is still going strong more than 25 years later. In April 2023, a new series launched, featuring a young girl, Riko, and a boy, Roy, as its dual protagonists. Furthermore, Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A (Zetto Ee) was released for Nintendo Switch on October 16, 2025.

Handcrafted Delights: Pokemon Kyo-gashi from Shichijo Kanshundo
This new collection of Kyo-gashi, inspired by “Pokemon,” is being launched by Shichijo Kanshundo. Each “Pokemon Kyo-gashi” is an exquisite creation, handcrafted one by one by master artisans, expressing Pokemon characters conceptualized from Kyoto’s rich culture and scenic beauty.
The Pokemon Jou-namagashi (moist fresh sweets) feature Pikachu, Hooh, Daatengu, and Dooh. Each Pokemon is meticulously crafted using traditional techniques such as Nerikiri (a pliable dough made from white bean paste and mochi flour) and Jooyoo-manjuu (steamed buns made with grated yam and rice flour).

The Pokemon Fu-yaki (crispy baked wafers) showcase Pikachu, Koiking, and Hooh. These delightful wafers beautifully illustrate Pokemon alongside Kyoto’s scenic charm and traditional Japanese patterns.

The Pokemon Higashi (dry sweets) feature Pikachu. It is presented with a Unkin pattern, an elegant design that combines cherry blossoms (representing clouds) and autumn leaves (representing brocade) into a single motif.
These “Pokemon Kyo-gashi” are a delightful fusion with Kyoto’s culture and landscapes. We invite you to experience this unique cultural blend of Pokemon, born in Japan and adored worldwide, with the traditional art of Kyo-gashi.
