What is `Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki`? A Touching Tale of a Mother and Children Living Earnestly Amidst Beautiful Nature — Synopsis Introduction

Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki is the second original feature-length animation by Director Hosoda Mamoru, who joined Toei Douga (now Toei Animation) in 1991, became an animator, and then made his directorial debut with Gekijouban Digimon Adventure in 1999. After going independent, his works Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and Summer Wars, which brought him international attention, were produced by Madhouse. This film, released in 2012, became the very first work created after Director Hosoda founded his animation film production company, Studio Chizu.
The story centers on Hana, a woman who falls in love with a man who happens to be an Ookami Otoko (wolf-man). It beautifully depicts her journey of growth through romance, marriage, childbirth, and raising her children, as well as the lives of her two Ookami Kodomo (wolf children), Ame and Yuki. This heartwarming tale follows the brother and sister as they grapple with their unique heritage, experience struggles, and ultimately find their own paths to independence.
The official website for the film describes this as “a challenge possible only through animation: portraying the entirety of 13 years of time within approximately two hours.” Within this ambitious scope, the film explores universal and realistic themes that everyone faces, such as the choices one makes as a parent or child at various stages of life. These themes are skillfully interwoven with the fantastical premise of Ookami Kodomo born from a human and a wolf-man.
After its release, Anime!Anime! conducted interviews with Director Hosoda just before the Blu-ray and DVD release in 2013, and with Producer Saitou Yuuichirou after the release. Both Director Hosoda and Producer Saitou shared their aspirations for future works and their outlook as of 2013. Looking back at these interviews now, 12 years later, and considering the subsequent works by Director Hosoda and Studio Chizu, offers a fascinating perspective.
Synopsis
Hana, a university student, fell in love with a man the moment they met. She later learned that he was an Ookami Otoko living as a human, but her feelings for him never wavered. As they began to live together, new lives were born. Their daughter, born on a snowy day, was named Yuki (Snow), and their son, born on a rainy day, was named Ame (Rain).

Yuki is lively and curious, while Ame is delicate and timid. Although they appear to be an ordinary family, their children were Ookami Kodomo, possessing both human and wolf forms. Hiding this secret, the family of four quietly started their life in a corner of the city. Their modest yet happy days seemed destined to last forever, but they were suddenly shattered by the death of their father, the Ookami Otoko.

Left behind, Hana, though devastated, vowed to “raise the two properly.” To allow her children to choose whether to live as humans or wolves in the future, she decided to move away from the scrutinizing eyes of the city to a rural town surrounded by harsh yet bountiful nature.
About the Staff and Cast: Hosoda Works Regulars, Renowned Actors, and Popular Voice Actors Appear!
The script for Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki was co-written by Director Hosoda Mamoru and Okudera Satoko, who received the “Nihon Academy Shou” (Japan Academy Film Prize) for Best Screenplay for Youkame no Semi and is also handling the script for this year’s highly anticipated Kokuhou. The character designs are by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, well-known for his work on the Evangelion Shin Gekijouban series and a returning collaborator on Hosoda’s films after Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and Summer Wars.
The cast features Miyazaki Aoi as the protagonist Hana, the mother of the Ookami Kodomo, and Oosawa Takao as her husband, the Ookami Otoko. Miyazaki Aoi also appeared in Director Hosoda’s next work, Bakemono no Ko (which will be broadcast next week), as the young protagonist Kyuuta. Her other animated film credits include Giniro no Kami no Agito, Colorful, and Kagami no Kojou. Oosawa Takao is perhaps best known to anime fans for his role as Ouki in the live-action Kingdom film series in recent years.
Among the Ookami Kodomo, the older sister Yuki in her childhood is voiced by Kuroki Haru, who went on to play important roles in subsequent Hosoda films, such as the young Ichirouhiko in Bakemono no Ko and Mirai-chan in Mirai no Mirai. Nishii Yukito, who voiced the young brother Ame, may surprise some to learn he later appeared in TV dramas like Kamen Rider Ex-Aid and the first live-action film of Touken Ranbu, Eiga Touken Ranbu - Keishou-.

The cast also includes Someya Shota as Tanabe-sensei, Yuki’s elementary school teacher, who has frequently participated in subsequent Hosoda works such as Bakemono no Ko and Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime (to be broadcast the week after next), and will also appear in the latest film, Hateshinaki Scarlet. Sugawara Bunta, a legendary actor known for his roles in the Jingi Naki Tatakai series and Truck Yarou series, leaves a strong impression as Nirasaki, the elderly neighbor who looks out for Hana.

Furthermore, Hayashibara Megumi, beloved for her roles as Ayanami Rei in the Evangelion series, Haibara Ai in Meitantei Konan, and Ranma in Ranma 1/2, also makes an appearance as Souhei’s Mother (voiced by Hiraoka Takuma), a character who plays a key role in a pivotal event in the story. Be sure to listen closely when she speaks!
Comments Arrive from Director Hosoda and Miyazaki Aoi — ‘Themes Also Shared with `Hateshinaki Scarlet`!’ — New Information and Opening Also Highlights
In anticipation of this broadcast on Kinyou Road Show, comments have arrived from Director Hosoda and Miyazaki Aoi.
Director Hosoda spoke about Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki in connection with his latest work: “Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki was my first attempt to portray the parent-child relationship head-on. There is a parent’s love for their child, the child grows up… and then there is separation. In that sense, it shares common themes with Hateshinaki Scarlet.”
Miyazaki Aoi commented, “Even now, I often hear people say they love Ookami Kodomo. For those who watched it back then, I believe there will be even more scenes that resonate deeply if they revisit this work now that their circumstances may have changed.” Her words certainly build excitement for viewers to re-watch the film on this special occasion.
Furthermore, new information about Studio Chizu and Director Hosoda’s latest film, Hateshinaki Scarlet, is expected to be announced during the latter half of the program. Be sure to look forward to new details regarding the music, which remains shrouded in mystery!
