The Maestro of Macabre: Ito Junji’s Enduring Legacy
Ito Junji, born on July 31, 1963, in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, initially pursued a career as a dental technician. However, destiny called when “Monthly Halloween” magazine established the “Umezu Prize” for new manga artists. Driven by a desire for Umezu Kazuo to read his work, Ito-sensei began submitting his creations. In 1986, his submission Tomie received an honorable mention, marking his debut and instantly becoming one of his signature works.
Three years later, after dedicating himself full-time to manga artistry, Ito Junji went on to create a slew of masterpieces, including Michi no Nai Machi (which can be translated as “Town Without Streets”), Kubitsuri Kikuu (which can be translated as “The Hanging Balloons”), the popular Souichi series, and Shibito no Koiwazurai (which can be translated as “Lovesickness of the Dead”). In 1998, he launched Uzumaki in “Weekly Big Comic Spirits.” He has since continued to unveil unique works like Gyo and Kaidan, earning immense popularity not just in Japan but across the globe. Ito Junji is celebrated for winning the prestigious “Eisner Award” – one of the most authoritative manga awards worldwide – a remarkable four times, and he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2025, solidifying his legendary status.
