TV Broadcast Memorial Day and NHK’s Anime Legacy
Hey there! Did you know that February 1st is celebrated as “TV Broadcast Memorial Day” in Japan? This special day marks the anniversary of when NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, launched the country’s first regular television service back in 1953.
NHK has a long and storied history as a public broadcaster, and its connection to anime runs deep. It all started in 1978 with their first TV anime series, Mirai Shounen Conan (which can be translated as Future Boy Conan). Fast forward to recent years, from 2025 to 2026, NHK has been bringing us some awesome titles like Ao no Orchestra (The Blue Orchestra) and Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity).
