Subaru Natsuki’s desperate attempt to save the victims of the Sin Archbishops has led him and his allies to the Pleiades Watchtower. But the second trial has thrown everything into chaos: Subaru has lost his memory, and with it, his sanity. The situation is a labyrinth with no exit.
Episode 75 of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (4th Season, Soushitsu-hen), titled “Zanshou” (Remnants), aired on June 3. It wastes no time plunging viewers into horror. Immediately after fleeing the tower—forgetting the rule that leaving means certain death—Subaru is attacked by a giant sand worm monster. Barely surviving, he falls into an underground maze and wanders aimlessly. When he finally emerges, he finds himself back at the starting point outside the tower.
His mind shattered, Subaru grins and turns his murderous intent toward Emilia, Ram, Beatrice, Julius, Anastasia, Meili, and Shaura—now strangers to him. Someone among them must have pushed him over the edge. In his paranoid state, everyone is an enemy. But when he returns inside the tower, he finds the entire group already brutally murdered. Even the viewers were taken aback: “They’re just dead…” “What is this horror anime?” “All of them? Oh, this is bad. I’m getting flashbacks to the mansion attack.”

First suspicion fell on Shaura, who had broken the rule about leaving the tower. But Shaura herself lay among the corpses, as viewers noted: “I thought Shaura had killed everyone, but even Shaura is dead?” Only the ground dragon Patlash survived. Subaru, however, screamed at Patlash, “Don’t follow me! I have to kill everyone who’s still alive!” and stabbed the loyal dragon. Still, Patlash sensed an incoming threat and carried Subaru to safety—despite the sword still embedded in her body. Viewers were moved: “Patlash, how selfless can you be…”

Subaru’s relief was short-lived. A voice behind him said, “Try to dodge this time, hero…” The speaker was Rem, who had been sleeping until now. With a single swing, Rem beheaded Subaru. The shock was immediate: “Rem? Did she wake up?!” “Wait wait wait wait!” The end credits confirmed the voice actor as Inori Minase, Rem’s voice, deepening the mystery.

Returning via his death-reset ability, Subaru restarted the investigation without revealing his amnesia. He first spoke with Julius, managing to hold a coherent conversation despite his memory loss—viewers praised his skill: “He’s good at keeping the conversation going.” Then he talked with Meili, who whispered, “About last night—how serious should I take what you said?” Before Subaru could process that, his consciousness cut out. He woke to find Meili strangled to death. Viewers were as confused as Subaru: “What happened?” “Did his memory skip?” Then Subaru pulled back his sleeve to reveal a chilling message carved into his arm: “Natsuki Subaru Sanjou.”

“‘Natsuki Subaru Sanjou’ is terrifying.” “What does this mean?” “What are we being shown?” The episode left viewers reeling, with the second trial far from resolved and only two episodes remaining in the Soushitsu-hen arc.
