Gender ‘Mona Lisa’ no Kimi e. TV Anime Adaptation Announced, Produced by Shaft

The TV anime adaptation of Gender “Mona Lisa” no Kimi e. (Seibetsu “Mona Lisa” no Kimi e.) has been announced, alongside the release of a new teaser visual.

The original manga, by Yoshimura Sen, has surpassed 1 million copies in cumulative circulation. Set in a world where around age 12 one’s body begins to change into the desired gender, and by age 14 becomes either male or female, the story follows protagonist Hinase, who remains the only “genderless” person even at 18. The series is a youth ensemble drama depicting Hinase grappling with identity and love alongside childhood friends Ritsu and Shiori, who have chosen their genders.

Animation production will be handled by Shaft, the acclaimed studio celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025. Known for visually distinctive works such as the Puella Magi Madoka Magica series, the Monogatari series, and March Comes in Like a Lion, Shaft will bring the delicate and vivid world of the manga to life.

Along with the adaptation announcement, a teaser visual has been unveiled. Furthermore, original author Yoshimura Sen contributed a commemorative illustration and a message of joy.

Yoshimura Sen (full comment)

“It’s an anime adaptation!!!
Thanks to everyone who supported me,
we’ve finally gotten an anime adaptation!
Having an original work adapted into anime was my biggest dream as a manga artist,
so I’m truly happy! Yay!

I haven’t seen the finished footage yet, but
from the materials I’ve been shown during supervision,
I can feel the atmosphere that it will become a stylish and wonderful anime,
so I hope you’ll join me in looking forward to the broadcast!
I’m too curious to see how the turquoise visual effects from the manga will be animated!

With the help of everyone involved in production and the power of animation,
I sincerely hope this work will be enjoyed by many new people!!”

Additionally, it has been announced that the series will participate in AnimagiC 2026, one of Europe’s largest anime conventions, held in Mannheim, Germany from July 31, 2026. On Saturday, August 1 (local time), a panel stage will be held to globally debut the main cast information and a teaser PV for the series.
