The next original theatrical film in the Sword Art Online franchise has been officially titled Gekijouban Sword Art Online: Integral Domain and is set for release in 2028. Alongside the announcement, a teaser visual, a new trailer, and details on the main staff and cast have been unveiled.
The Sword Art Online series, based on the light novels by Kawahara Reki (published under Dengeki Bunko), began with the first volume in April 2009 and has since sold over 30 million copies worldwide. The TV anime adaptation first aired in 2012 and has spanned four series totaling 97 episodes, culminating in the massive Alicization arc. Previous theatrical releases include the original 2017 film Ordinal Scale and the two Progressive films, which together have grossed over 5 billion yen in Japan, each topping the box office in their opening weekends.
The new film was first announced during the 10th anniversary event “Sword Art Online: Full Dive” on November 6, 2022. Further details were teased after the “Yuna First Live” event on April 29, 2026, and finally revealed on July 6, 2026, following the broadcast of episode 14 of the first Aincrad arc.
The teaser visual, drawn by character designer Yamamoto Yumiko, has also been released. Returning cast members include Matsuoka Yoshitsugu as Kirito and Tomatsu Haruka as Asuna.
