A new project has launched in the collaboration between world-renowned ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai and virtual singer Hatsune Miku. Titled Katsushika Hokusai × Hatsune Miku Rella, the initiative features brand-new illustrations by popular artist Rella, which are being turned into a wide range of merchandise.
This double-license project fuses the timeless ukiyo-e world of Hokusai—famous for his powerful waves and beautiful depictions of Japan’s four seasons—with the modern pop-culture icon Hatsune Miku, bridging centuries of art. Rella, known for delicate colors and a fantastical style, has created original artwork that blends Hokusai’s traditional beauty with contemporary sensibilities. Rella has previously worked on official Hatsune Miku events and commemorative projects.

Comment from Rella
Rella shared her thoughts on the project: “Following ‘Mikaeri Bijin Miku,’ I have the opportunity to collaborate with ukiyo-e again. As with ‘Mikaeri Bijin,’ I focused on digitally reproducing the original touch and the texture of woodblock printing. This time, I arranged the Piapro Characters official costumes based on elements extracted from Hokusai’s masterpieces. Thank you.”
The fusion of traditional beauty and modern culture in this new Katsushika Hokusai × Hatsune Miku project promises further developments worth watching.
