A special print exhibition celebrating the 70th anniversary of manga artist Chiba Tetsuya’s career will be held at Osaka Takashimaya from July 22 to July 28, 2026.
Exhibition Overview
Titled “画業70周年 ちばてつや版画展” (70th Anniversary Chiba Tetsuya Print Exhibition), the event brings together iconic scenes from Chiba’s timeless masterpieces, such as Ashita no Joe (original story by Takasaku Asao), Ore wa Teppei, Notari Matsutaro, and Ashita Tenki ni Naare. The prints highlight his powerful character depictions and rich human drama.
Among the works on display is “宿命の対決” (Fateful Showdown), a Piezograph print measuring 410×530 mm, priced at 220,000 yen.
About Chiba Tetsuya
Born in Tokyo in 1939, Chiba Tetsuya made his professional debut in 1956 with a book-length work. Since then, he has produced numerous classics and remained a leading figure in the Japanese manga world for decades. In 2018 he became chairman of the Japan Cartoonists Association, and in 2022 he was elected a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 2024 he became the first manga artist to receive the Order of Culture, earning high praise both domestically and internationally.
Two companion prints, “宿命のライバル(ジョー)” (Fated Rival – Joe) and “宿命のライバル(力石)” (Fated Rival – Rikishi), are each 410×313 mm Piezograph prints priced at 132,000 yen.
New Work and Event Details
The exhibition will also debut a brand-new illustration drawn especially for the 70th anniversary. Visitors can trace the creative journey of an artist who has captivated audiences for seven decades.
Another featured print, “ゴングのあと” (After the Gong), measures 310×210 mm and is a Piezograph priced at 77,000 yen.
The “70th Anniversary Chiba Tetsuya Print Exhibition” takes place at Osaka Takashimaya, 7th floor, POP UP STATION [7F1] (5-1-5 Namba, Chuo-ku, Osaka). Hours: daily until 7:00 p.m., with final day closing at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more details, please refer to the official event page.
