Anime Adaptation Announced
Kodansha has opened an official website for the anime adaptation of Monma Tsukasa and Shikako‘s manga Manshuu Ahen Squad on Monday.
Serialization and Staff Changes
Monma and Shikako began serializing the historical crime manga on the Comic Days platform in April 2020. It later moved to Weekly Young Magazine in September 2021.
The series went on hiatus after Shikako’s death in November 2025. It resumed serialization on October 5, as per their wishes, with Tsurushima taking over as illustrator. Kodansha published the 22nd volume in November 2025, and the manga has more than 3 million copies in circulation.
English Release and Awards
Kodansha licensed the series in English through its K Manga service in May 2023. The 14th volume went on sale on September 8, while the 15th volume is scheduled for release on November 10.
The manga was nominated for the 47th Kodansha Manga Awards in the general category and the 70th Shogakukan Manga Awards.
Synopsis
“Here in Manchuria, the cheapest thing you’ll find is a person’s life.”
In 1937, Higata Isamu is sent to the Japan-controlled Chinese puppet state of Manchukuo to serve in its standing army. After losing sight in his right eye during battle, he is banished to an agricultural facility where he is constantly abused by the commanding officers. Then, in a dusty corner, he discovers a field of poppies, the raw materials for opium. In order to raise money for his seriously ill mother, Higata decides to produce the illicit drug—a choice that sends his future and the fate of all Manchuria into directions unknown.
