Gekijouban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bouhi no Hihou Casts Sawashiro Miyuki, Mikami Ai; 4th PV Streamed

The film Gekijouban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bouhi no Hihou opens in theaters on December 11, 2026. The fourth entry in a four-day character PV series, focusing on Ruochin and Inshan, has arrived, and two key cast members have been announced: Sawashiro Miyuki as the late consort Ruochin and Mikami Ai as Inshan, Ruochin’s former head lady-in-waiting.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is a mystery entertainment series based on Hyuuga Natsu’s light novels, published by Imagica Infos under its Hero Bunko label. The series has surpassed 57 million copies in circulation worldwide. Set in the rear palace, it follows Maomao, a girl who serves as a poison taster and solves difficult cases. Its mystery plotting, exotic world, and human drama have earned fans across generations and borders.

The TV anime aired its first season from October 2023 to March 2024 and its second season from January to July 2025. A third season is currently broadcasting after starting in October. The first theatrical film, Gekijouban Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bouhi no Hihou, features a completely new story with an original concept by Hyuuga Natsu and centers on a new mystery involving a hidden treasure in a water city.

The newly released character PV introduces Ruochin, a mid-rank consort who died in the rear palace five years ago, and Inshan, who once served her as head lady-in-waiting. Inshan now serves the Mi clan and acts as head lady-in-waiting to Muqing. She protects Muqing, who is targeted by other children of the clan as the child of a concubine, and gently recalls Ruochin with the line ‘Onee-sama liked this flower.’ The PV also shows Inshan seeing Ruochin’s remains return to her homeland and murmuring, ‘Why…’, a moment that suggests the beginning of the case.

Also intriguing is the phrase ‘a lonely person’ that escapes from Ruochin’s vacant expression. She wished that five years after her death, she could return to her homeland. What does the five-year span mean? What is the real reason she wished to go home even after death? In the latter half of the PV, Maomao can be seen approaching that mystery.

Two figures who hold the key to the story have also been revealed. Sawashiro Miyuki will play the late consort Ruochin, while Mikami Ai will play Inshan, Ruochin’s former head lady-in-waiting. For Mikami, this is her first work after appearing in a morning drama. A fan of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, she commented, ‘Because I love the work, I also felt nervous and anxious about whether I could have a wonderful influence, but I faced it with all my might.’

Mikami also shared her enthusiasm for the film: ‘The film is a mystery with a truly grand scale. Fans of the anime and original novels, as well as those experiencing it for the first time, will definitely enjoy it, so please see it in theaters!’

Cast Comments

Mikami Ai as Inshan

‘I had been watching the TV series and was a fan, so I was truly happy when I was chosen to appear. I feel that the great appeal of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is not only its mysteries but also the changing relationship between Maomao and Jinshi-sama, the lives of each individual, and the drama they carry, all depicted in fine detail. Because I love the work, I also felt nervous and anxious about whether I could have a wonderful influence, but I faced it with all my might.

The Inshan I played may seem mysterious at first, but she is a cool, strong woman with a core. She actually carries loneliness and is a very human character. While acting opposite Yuuki Aoi as Maomao and Sawashiro Miyuki as Ruochin, they drew out Inshan’s emotions even more deeply.

The film is a mystery with a truly grand scale. Fans of the anime and original novels, as well as those experiencing it for the first time, will definitely enjoy it, so please see it in theaters!’

Sawashiro Miyuki as Ruochin

‘I am Sawashiro Miyuki, and I have been chosen to voice Ruochin in the film. Ruochin is read as ‘Ruochin.’ When I received the script, the first fun part was matching the name I had heard in the anime to these kanji. Ruochin is deceased. I was able to record together with Mikami Ai, who plays Inshan. There were parts I could not fully narrow down in interpretation during my checks at home, and there were scenes where new options were born in the studio, making it a luxurious time. Who exactly are they? Please find the answers in theaters.’
