The anime film is based on the fantasy mystery novel *Kono Hon wo Nusumu Mono wa* written by Fukamidori Nowaki. The novel was first published back in October 2020 under the Kadokawa Bunko imprint.

The story also received a manga adaptation illustrated by Sora Kakeru. This manga was serialized in Young Ace magazine from December 2021 until March 2023. The manga adaptation concluded with its third volume, which was released in April 2023.

For readers outside of Japan, Yen Press has licensed both the original novel and its manga adaptation for English release. The first volume of the novel is already available, having been released on February 18. The final volume of the manga in English is scheduled to be released in October 2024.
