On June 21, 2026, during a special program for the annual “Watanagashi no Hi” event, a new promotional video for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni was released, and with it came the announcement that a new TV anime series is in production.
Background
The anime is based on the sound novel game by Ryukishi07. The first season aired in 2006, followed by the second season Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai in 2007, which delved into the truth behind the events. The series is known for its shocking twists and a mystery element touted as having a “1% correct answer rate,” sparking intense fan discussion.
The story is set in June 1983 in the remote mountain village of Hinamizawa. Every year, the village holds a traditional festival called Watanagashi, on which day one person dies and another goes missing—the so-called “Hinamizawa Continuous Strange Deaths.” From that day onward, the characters’ peaceful daily lives suddenly turn into tragedy.
Teaser Visual and Cast
The PV unveiled a teaser visual and confirmed that the main cast will reprise their roles: Soichiro Hoshi as Keiichi Maebara, Mai Nakahara as Rena Ryugu, Satsuki Yukino as Mion and Shion Sonozaki, Mika Kanai as Satoko Hojo, and Yukari Tamura as Rika Furude. Notably, the PV includes newly recorded dialogue for Rena.
Animation production is handled by Studio Deen, the same studio that worked on the original series 20 years ago. The main visual released alongside the PV features a smiling Rena Ryugu with the tagline “Minna, okaeri” (Everyone, welcome back).
20th Anniversary Logo
A commemorative logo celebrating the TV anime’s 20th anniversary was also revealed. The design uses a tear-off calendar motif to evoke the weight of two decades, and incorporates Rena’s iconic hatchet.
