Column: Why ‘Non-Struggling Happiness’ in Isekai Captivates Modern Viewers

[By Ebisawa Nachi]

Isekai stories that focus on peaceful daily life rather than battle and competition are gaining strong support. Why does this ‘happiness without struggle’ resonate so deeply with today’s audience? Let’s explore.

The ‘Slow Life’ Trend: Non-Fighting Daily Isekai

Isekai reincarnation and summoning stories remain popular in summer 2026, but attention is shifting toward ‘daily life’ narratives. In 2025, titles like Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi (cooking/gourmet) and Yasashii Kizoku no Kyuuka no Susume (healing coexistence) led the way. In 2026, Isekai Nonbiri Nouka (farming) and Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei (village-building) continue the trend of using cheat abilities to enjoy a comfortable otherworldly life.

Even Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, which has battle scenes, captivates viewers with protagonist Rimuru using his past-life construction skills to build a nation. These ‘daily isekai slow life’ stories sync with popular games like Animal Crossing, Minecraft, ARK: Survival Evolved, and Tomodachi Collection: Waku Waku Life, which let players live as inhabitants of a fictional world. The freedom to shape one’s own world and enjoy life at a comfortable pace mirrors the healing appeal of ‘non-struggling’ isekai.

From ‘Demon Lord Defeat’ to ‘Daily Living’: The Acceleration of Healing

When did this trend begin? Looking back, Isekai Shokudou (2017) showed isekai residents simply enjoying delicious food. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. That year’s Kamisama ni Hirowareta Otoko depicted a slow life touched by kindness, followed by Slime Taoshite 300-nen, Shiranai Uchi ni Level Max ni Nattemashita (2021), which became a hit by following Azusa, a reincarnated woman seeking a slow life after dying from overwork. 2021 also saw Cheat Yakushi no Slow Life and Shin no Nakama janai to Yuusha no Party wo Oidasareta node, Henkyou de Slow Life suru Koto ni Shimashita, making it a true ‘slow life元年.’ From then on, protagonists who ‘don’t want to struggle even in another world’ and ‘just want to be healed’ began appearing one after another.

Modern Knowledge as Power: Building a Comfortable Life in Another World

A key feature of these works is their rich dialogue. Instead of clashing swords, characters build relationships through knowledge and conversation. In ‘daily isekai slow life,’ people from different cultures and skills interact peacefully, understanding each other. There is a sense of ‘another daily life’ where modern knowledge becomes a resource for mutual help, free from real-world constraints. The accumulation of small interactions and daily improvements provides a comforting healing effect for readers and viewers.

A recent example is Isekai Nonbiri Nouka (2023). Protagonist Hiraku Machio, after dying from overwork at a black company, is reincarnated in another world and uses a ‘universal farming tool’ and his past-life knowledge to cultivate the land. He expands his village while building bonds with companions—a heartwarming slow life with minimal combat.

The Thrill of Efficiency and Life Magic: The Appeal of Isekai Slow Life

Another staple is the ‘modern knowledge and meta-perspective overpowered efficiency.’ In Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei (2026), protagonist Van regains his past-life memories at age two and is hailed as a genius, but when his aptitude is found to be ‘life magic,’ he is exiled to a border village at age eight. Using non-offensive life magic, he develops the land with companions, building walls in spectacular fashion. The sight of creating a city with ‘life magic’ that makes daily life comfortable gives viewers a sense of exhilaration.

These protagonists observe the world from a slight distance, using knowledge and ingenuity to control situations. Seeing people who were unlucky in their past lives gain a sense of omnipotence in another world is refreshing and blows away viewers’ daily frustrations. Above all, there is a sense of security in ‘being able to live as oneself in a safe world.’ A gentle value system that values fulfillment over results and empathy over competition soothes the modern viewer’s heart.

With many light novels still awaiting anime adaptation, this summer is a perfect time to find healing in stories of people living peacefully in another world.
