Experience the Rap Battles Up Close! Report on the “Movie Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Exhibition”

The exhibition for Hipu Mubi, also known as the movie Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-, titled “Movie Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Exhibition,” is currently being held until July 14th at PARCO FACTORY on the 7th floor of Ikebukuro PARCO Main Building in Tokyo. Here’s a report on the exhibition experience.

What is Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-?

Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- is a music-based character rap project that began in September 2017. A total of 18 unique main characters are divided into six teams, engaging in intense rap battles. Prominent rappers and trackmakers leading Japan’s hip-hop scene participate as creators, and voice actors perform the rap tracks, developing each character’s story through music.

The first movie adaptation, Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-, garnered attention as an interactive film where the outcome of the rap battles displayed on screen is decided by real-time audience votes within the theater.

Stepping Into the Exhibition

Upon entering, you’re greeted by striking visuals of the 21 characters bravely facing the Final Division Rap Battle, alongside memorable scenes from the movie’s opening. The venue plays the songs featured in Hipu Mubi, making you feel as though you’re right there in the theater!

Relive the Intense Battles

Proceeding further, you enter the First Stage zone, where you can look back on the battles from the 1st Battle (Buster Bros!!! VS Bad Ass Temple), 2nd Battle (MAD TRIGGER CREW VS Dotsuitare Hompo), and 3rd Battle (Fling Posse VS Matenrou).

Examining the displayed scene cuts allows you to appreciate the characters anew. You might find new details like, “This is the face they made during that rap!” or “Wow, they look really hurt here!” The lyrics are displayed three-dimensionally, giving you a strange feeling of stepping into the visuals themselves.

Dive into the Second Stage

Following this is the Second Stage area, where you can fully appreciate the stages of each Division. While in the movie only the three teams who won the Second Stage are shown, this exhibition displays the stages of all six Divisions. You might find yourself getting so absorbed here that it’s hard to move on to the next area!

The Climax: Final Stage

Finally, you reach the Final Stage, where the Kotonoha Tou makes their appearance. Life-size panels of the six Divisions adorn the walls, and as you take photos with your favorite goods or plushies… the song “Claim Victory” starts playing from the central monitor! Listening closely, you’ll hear the lyrics of all 21 characters playing endlessly. Surprisingly, the “Claim Victory” song, which originally has six different patterns, has been edited into a special version just for this exhibition. This is a treat not only for those who haven’t seen all the patterns in the movie but also for those who want to compare the lyrics again.
