Sanrio Transforms Pediatric Ward with 23 Characters in ‘Stroll and Outing’ Themed Design

Sanrio has implemented a large-scale space design for the entire pediatric ward area of the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center in Shibuya, Tokyo. Covering a total of 395 square meters, the project features all 23 Sanrio characters. A ceremony commemorating the completion was held on July 9, 2026.

Design Concept: Stroll and Outing

For this project, Sanrio designers created three new original designs. Under the concept of “osanpo & odekake” (stroll and outing), the aim was to create an environment where children can feel closer to the outside world alongside the characters, easing their anxiety during their hospital stay.

The treatment room features a bright picnic-themed design, helping children feel at ease even in stressful situations. Shared areas are decorated with cheerful motifs, naturally encouraging conversation among patients and families.

The reception room, where families receive medical explanations, depicts characters walking hand in hand to provide comfort to both children and their families.

Ceremony with Hello Kitty

At the completion ceremony, Hello Kitty herself participated in the ribbon-cutting, filling the venue with smiles.

Dr. Atsushi Nakajima, director of the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, said: “For hospitalized children, the hospital is not only a place for treatment but also a place for daily life. Sanrio’s beloved characters, by being close to the children, help ease their anxiety and tension, creating a warm environment where they can feel smiles and hope. I hope this space will brighten the children’s hearts and support their speedy recovery.”

Part of the Sanrio Nakayoku Project

This initiative was planned as part of Sanrio’s materiality focus on “Well-Being Fulfillment.” It is an extension of the “Sanrio Nakayoku Project,” which has seen Hello Kitty visit hospitals around the world. By creating a space where characters are always present, the project aims to stay close to children and generate smiles. Sanrio will continue to promote sustainability efforts based on its corporate philosophy “Minna Nakayoku” (Everyone Friends) and its vision “One World, Connecting Smiles.”
