The joint exhibition “Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru & Mahjin Souzouden Wataru Ten,” focusing on the TV anime Mahjin Souzouden Wataru and its original series Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru, is set to be held from July 12, 2025, to August 3, 2025, at Toukyou Dome City Gallery AaMo. The Legend Begins: Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru

The Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru anime series kicked off with the first TV anime, Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru, which aired from April 1988 to March 1989 with 45 episodes. This was followed by the second installment, Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru 2, starting in March 1990, and the third, Chou Majin Eiyuuden Wataru, from October 1997. The story follows Sentou Wataru, an energetic fourth-grader with a strong sense of justice, who is transported to the other world of Shinbukai. There, he becomes the Savior of Soukaizan, a mountain ruled by the evil emperor Doakudar, and embarks on a journey with his companions to save the world.

In April 2020, fans rejoiced with the release of the highly anticipated new web anime, Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru: Shichi Kon no Ryujinmaru. All 9 episodes were streamed on the “BANDAI SPIRITS Official Channel.” Furthermore, a special edited version featuring new cuts, titled Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru: Shichi Kon no Ryujinmaru -Saikai-, became a hot topic when it received a theatrical screening in 2022.

A New Era: Mahjin Souzouden Wataru

Mahjin Souzouden Wataru is the newest TV anime installment in the series, which aired from January to June 2025. While inheriting the core spirit of the original series, this work spins a brand new tale. The protagonist, Hoshibe Wataru, appears as a Ryuuchuubaa aiming to become a superstar. Together with his companion Majin, Ryujinmaru, he embarks on a hugely popular adventure battle in an otherworldly land made of blocks.

Exhibition Highlights: Funky Cool Experiences Await!

The joint exhibition “Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru & Mahjin Souzouden Wataru Ten” aims to showcase the charm of the Wataru series, which has been loved by fans of all ages, genders, and nationalities. The exhibition promises a wide array of “omoshiro kakkoii” (funky cool) and “byou de noreru” (instantly exciting) experiential content that lets you fully immerse yourself in the world of Wataru.

Don’t miss the audio guide, featuring newly recorded voices! Sentou Wataru (voiced by Tanaka Mayumi), the Savior of Soukaizan, and Hoshibe Wataru (voiced by Tamura Mutsumi), the Savior of Chuukai, will guide you through an adventure tale, recounting events from their respective worlds.

Get ready to meet your heroes! MR (Mixed Reality) characters will be appearing at the venue. From Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru, Sentou Wataru and Torao will be there, alongside Hoshibe Wataru and Tenbu Kakeru from Mahjin Souzouden Wataru. You can experience special greetings using devices that make the characters appear as if they are right there in the real world with you. Digital figures of these same MR characters will also be available for purchase in the merchandise area.

Special Collaborations!

To commemorate the exhibition, exciting collaborations with NG Kishi Ramune & 40 and Boku, Shimaenaga will also take place! The collaboration with NG Kishi Ramune & 40, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, is a true dream come true. Commemorative goods featuring a newly drawn key visual by Koushina Hiroshi (director of Mahjin Eiyuuden Wataru: Shichi Kon no Ryujinmaru) and Saitou Takuya (character designer for NG Kishi Ramune & 40) will be sold inside the exhibition venue. Additionally, a kitchen car will be set up on the 2nd floor of the Yellow Building within Toukyou Dome City, offering collaboration menu items and goods featuring illustrations of Ryujinmaru and Kingskassher.

The collaboration with Boku, Shimaenaga, an X (formerly Twitter) account that introduces the charm of Shimaenaga birds, teams up with Uzume, the Shimaenaga character appearing in Mahjin Souzouden Wataru. A heartwarming illustration showing Uzumaru and a Shimaenaga playing together has been specially drawn. Goods featuring this adorable illustration will also be available for purchase at the venue, so be sure to check them out!
