Kimi ga Shinu made Koi wo Shitai Episode 3: ‘Tomodachi’ Shocks Viewers with Mimi’s Secret – ‘What? Huh? Huh?’

The summer 2026 anime Kimi ga Shinu made Koi wo Shitai aired its third episode, “Tomodachi,” on July 21. What began as a warm, slice-of-life look at daily life between roommates took a sudden dark turn, leaving viewers stunned. Social media erupted with reactions like “First-timers, be careful not to get spoiled!” and “What must first-time anime viewers be thinking?”

The original manga by Aono Nachi is serialized in Ichijinsha’s “Ichijin Plus.” It is set in an orphanage that raises children as weapons for war, where girls learn to kill and are forbidden from grieving. The story follows 14-year-old Totsuki Shiina, who cannot accept this brutal reality, and Kagari Mimi, a cheerful, childlike girl rumored to be the school’s “secret weapon.”

The cast reprises roles from the manga’s PVs: Takahashi Rie as Totsuki Shiina, Hidaka Rina as Kagari Mimi, Seto Asami as Rijii Seiran, and Ishikawa Yui as Maude Ari. The all-star lineup had long fueled hopes for an anime adaptation.

“Do you hate Mimi?”

Episode 3 opens one month after Shiina and Mimi become roommates. Mimi is rumored to be a secret weapon, but in daily life she loses socks, neglects her hair, eats anything, and scores perfect on history tests while failing math. She also heads off to war with a smile. Shiina is gradually understanding Mimi, but still doesn’t know how to see her off. One day, classmate Ari bluntly asks, “Do you hate Mimi?” Shiina answers, “It’s not that I hate her…” but remains troubled by Mimi’s cheerful attitude toward battle.

“She regenerates even when torn apart!?”

Late at night, school nurse Fran receives a bloodstained bag containing severed limbs and hair. Muttering “That’s awful,” she tells the pieces to heal themselves. The mangled flesh regenerates into Mimi. ReoNa, who sings the opening theme “Amore,” posted on social media: “Bag………… torn apart…………” Viewers were shocked: “She regenerates even when torn apart!? Mimi is the strongest!” and “Is she a Frankenstein monster?” Fran comments, “No matter how many times I see it, it’s disgusting.”

“My first friend!”

Shiina makes onigiri and waits for Mimi’s return, though she admits to being scared of her. When Mimi comes back, Shiina apologizes for being cold and thanks her for healing her arm. As Mimi happily eats the onigiri, Shiina asks where Mimi was before transferring. Mimi replies, “I was underground. Alone in the dark.” Shiina then asks, “Would you be my friend?” Mimi hugs her tightly, exclaiming, “My first friend!”

“What do friends do on a day off?”

On their first holiday together, Mimi asks what friends do. Shiina suggests eating snacks, chatting, celebrating birthdays, helping each other, and sharing secrets. She also points out that friends should tell each other things that are hard to say, and notes that Mimi’s room is too messy. The internet reacted: “That’s really messy lol” and “What a pigsty!” But many praised Shiina: “Shiina is such a good mom” and “She’s more like a mother than a friend.” ReoNa tweeted, “It’s nice to see what the ‘school’ is like. The resolution of their world increases.” Aono Nachi also posted, “The cleaning scene is too cute!”

“Mimi cannot die…?”

After the room is cleaned, Fran calls Mimi to the battlefield again. Shiina worries, but Fran tells her, “Don’t worry, Mimi cannot die.” Viewers were confused: “She cannot die?” and “Is she truly immortal?”

“I’ll tell you tomorrow. Mimi’s secret.”

Shiina waits late into the night for Mimi’s return. When Mimi comes home near dawn, she joyfully dives onto the bed Shiina prepared, saying “boing!” She then says, “Friends share secrets, right? I’ll tell you tomorrow. Mimi’s secret.” Fans found Shiina’s waiting endearing: “She’s like a wife waiting for her husband.” The English subtitle even rendered “boing” as “boing.”

“Promise you won’t tell anyone.”

The next day, Mimi pulls Shiina by the hand, refusing invitations from Seiran and Ari to go to the cafeteria. “We’re going to talk about a secret!” she says. The internet grew uneasy: “Secret talk… I have a bad feeling…” They sit on a bench in the school courtyard. Mimi checks that no one is around, then whispers, “Promise you won’t tell anyone.” Shiina leans in. “Well…” Mimi whispers.

The revelation sent shockwaves through the audience. Reactions included: “I got chills,” “What does this mean?” “I literally said ‘What?’” and “I thought it was a cute slice-of-life episode, but then that line…” Many noted the title’s meaning shifted: “The title’s perspective changes now,” and “Which character does the title refer to?” Hidaka Rina (Mimi) posted after the broadcast, “The ending… another amazing cliffhanger.” ReoNa added, “The ED ‘Eternelle’ hits hard at that moment.” Sana of sajou no hana (ED singer) tweeted, “I was watching Shiina and Mimi’s conversation with a smile, then the end shocked me.”

Viewers are now torn between anticipation and dread: “I thought Shiina was the protagonist, but maybe Mimi is?” and “Give me the next episode now! I’m dying of curiosity!” Animation studio ROLL2 released key animation of the final scene featuring Mimi, Shiina, Seiran, and Ari.

Despite the shock, Mimi’s cuteness remains a highlight: “Her adorableness has broken through the limit in the anime,” and “The balance of moe and seriousness is perfect.”

Kimi ga Shinu made Koi wo Shitai airs every Tuesday at 21:30 on AT-X, followed by KBS Kyoto, Sun TV, and BS11. Streaming begins simultaneously on dAnime Store, U-NEXT, and Anime Hōdai, with additional platforms starting Fridays at 24:00.
