Studio Khara Unveils *SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières* Short Anime and Announces Full Series Adaptation at JAPAN EXPO!
Studio Khara’s new short anime, *SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières*, has been revealed. Its world premiere was held at the “JAPAN EXPO” event currently taking place in France. Following the screening, an anime adaptation of the main *Shuga Shuga Rune* manga was also announced.
On July 4th, at the “JAPAN EXPO” in Paris, France, Studio Khara held an event to announce their new short animation. Approximately 1,500 anime fans from around the world gathered at the YUZU stage to witness the moment of the new work’s world premiere.
Taking the stage were the director, Matsui Yuusuke, and animation producer, Fujiwara Kouhei, both from Studio Khara. After the secret screening of the short, it was revealed that the new short animation was *SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières*, a short celebrating the 20th anniversary of Moyoco Anno’s manga *Shuga Shuga Rune*.
*Shuga Shuga Rune* was serialized in the shoujo manga magazine “Nakayoshi” from 2003 to 2007. It’s a fantasy story where Chocolat Meilleure and Vanilla Mieux, two young witches, descend to the Human World to compete for the position of the next Queen of the Magical World, vying for human hearts filled with love. The short film *SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières* serves as a prequel to the manga, featuring an original story supervised by Moyoco Anno herself.
During the event, a talk session about the production of the short film was held. Towards the end, the surprising announcement of the production of a full anime series adapting the main *Shuga Shuga Rune* story was made, filling the venue with loud cheers and applause.
Event Report
This event featured director Matsui Yuusuke and animation producer Fujiwara Kouhei re-taking the stage after the short film screening, where they spoke about the thoughts they put into the work and shared production anecdotes.
Matsui-kantoku explained that they “imagined and depicted the journey to the Human World, which wasn’t drawn in the original work, as a prequel,” and revealed the detailed production process, stating that they exchanged opinions with the original author, Moyoco Anno, multiple times, even regarding the characters’ backgrounds.
On the other hand, Fujiwara-san stated, “Through this work, we want people to see the new talent at Studio Khara,” expressing his confidence in the finished short.
In the middle of the event, the original *Shuga Shuga Rune* manga was also introduced. It was mentioned that the series has been released worldwide, including in France.
Additionally, Moyoco Anno’s diverse body of work was highlighted, including her illustrations for the cover of Studio Ghibli’s booklet “Neppu” and collaborations with the traditional Japanese clothing brand “Hyakuyadou,” showcasing her broad appeal across various genres.
Towards the end of the event, another surprising announcement was made. The words “Production of *Shuga Shuga Rune* Main Story Anime Adaptation Decided” appeared on the screen! Cheers and applause erupted from the audience. When the MC asked Matsui-kantoku for his thoughts, he responded with a smile, “There’s a great quality to the sculpting unique to CG animation, so I hope you look forward to it. Thank you for your support.”
Finally, both Matsui-kantoku and Fujiwara-san expressed their gratitude, and the event concluded amidst much excitement.
