An outdoor screening of The First Slam Dunk has been announced for Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Tokyo Metropolitan Meiji Park. The event is free to attend, and fans are already expressing excitement on social media.
The film is based on Inoue Takehiko’s original manga Slam Dunk, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 issue 42 to 1996 issue 27. The manga, which follows the personal growth of high school basketball players, has sold over 120 million copies in Japan.
The First Slam Dunk was released in theaters on December 3, 2022, with Inoue himself serving as both writer and director. The film grossed over 15.5 billion yen at the Japanese box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 in Japan, including both domestic and foreign releases.
The official X (Twitter) account for the film announced the outdoor screening, stating: “We’ve decided to hold an outdoor screening of The First Slam Dunk in the park! On the day, a ‘Basketball Ennichi’ event where you can enjoy basketball in the park will also be held from 12:00! Please enjoy The First Slam Dunk with your family and friends as a final memory of summer 2026!”
