Re:Zero Season 4 Episode 80: Viewers Stunned by ‘Five Obstacles’ and the Shocking Truth About Reid

The summer anime Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World 4th season, Recapture Arc, aired its 80th episode, “Five Obstacles,” on August 26, 2026. The episode delivered a relentless roller-coaster of challenges, leaving viewers barely time to breathe—and ending with a revelation that had fans shouting at their screens.

Subaru’s memory loss was caused by Louis, the Gluttony Archbishop lurking in the Corridor of Memories, who devoured his recollections. Though Louis nearly consumed his memories again, Subaru was saved by Rem’s memories and managed to regain consciousness in the real world. What awaited him was an emergency: a horde of monsters from the Augria Dunes was descending on the watchtower, and another Gluttony bishop was also on the move.

This is arguably the worst situation Subaru has faced in the tower, and the group now has to confront it head-on. The episode throws obstacle after obstacle at them, and viewers were on the edge of their seats. If they can overcome all five, they might finally achieve their goal of rescuing the Gluttony victims—but each obstacle seems impossibly powerful.

“Don’t You Dare Say That Line!” – A Scene That Made Fans Clench Their Fists

After returning from the Corridor of Memories, Subaru immediately moves to deal with the monster swarm unleashed by Louis. He assigns Shaula and Meili to repel the beasts. Shaula’s machine-gun-like attacks and Meili’s control over monsters quickly strengthen their defense. Viewers were relieved, noting, “Meili is formidable as an enemy, but as an ally, she’s really dependable.”

However, Ray, the other Gluttony, is not so kind. He devours memories related to Emilia, causing even Emilia herself to become a “forgotten existence.” When Ram referred to her as “that unknown silver-haired woman,” viewers were taken aback: “Wait… silver-haired woman? Emilia? Huh?” and “Don’t eat memories so casually!”

But Subaru proved to be a pillar of strength. Suppressing his anger toward Ray, he calmly called out to Emilia, “I haven’t forgotten you!” Emilia responded with a radiant smile. Fans were moved: “She must be so happy to hear that—and from Subaru of all people!” and “The look on Emilia’s face when Subaru remembers her is just perfect.”

Viewers also sympathized with Ram, who spat at Ray, “I’ll make you regret being born.” They noted, “Ram is seriously angry,” and worried about the difficulty of fighting an enemy who can erase names and break coordination.

Then Reid appears. He quickly defeats Ray, but that only signals the arrival of an even stronger foe. A scorpion monster appears, plunging the situation into despair. Subaru then encounters Satella and wakes up at a new save point.

“Ah, this is total chaos…” Viewers struggled to keep up with the rapid-fire developments. Still, with Beatrice by Subaru’s side, they found hope: “Even with Return by Death and near-despair, Rem’s words and Beako’s presence are so reassuring.”

At this stage, the group faces a full course of difficulties: the monster horde, Ray’s assault, Reid’s appearance, and the scorpion monster. Subaru decides to trust Shaula and sends Meili to support her, while leaving Reid to Julius. He himself rushes to reunite with Emilia.

Suddenly, a change occurs. Emilia’s memories are intact, and Subaru gains a new skill that lets him sense souls and locate people. The reason for this skill remains a mystery, but there’s no time to ponder it. Viewers were just trying to process: “Subaru’s new skill?” and “He can see souls now?”

After reuniting with Emilia, Subaru faces Ray. Ray, one of the Gluttonies who stole Subaru’s memories, tries to shake him by mimicking Rem’s voice—recreating the famous scene from Season 1 Episode 18, “From Zero.” This infuriated not only Subaru but also the audience. “Stop using that tone!” and “Don’t you dare say that line!” were common reactions. But Ram delivered a decisive blow, cutting Ray off mid-sentence, earning praise: “Ram, you’re a real hero!”

Ray is then riddled with holes by Shaula—but the Shaula Subaru perceives turns out to be the scorpion monster! Viewers were confused: “The scorpion is Shaula?” “Shaula… how did she end up like this?” and “We need to figure out why Shaula became this way.” They also tried to make sense of the situation: “Is that really the end of the Gluttony?” and “Defeating the Gluttony doesn’t restore what was taken.”

By this point, the episode had already flooded viewers with information—Subaru’s new skill, the scorpion’s identity—and then came the final bombshell.

Reid is also a Gluttony. Though the reason is unclear, Roy, the third Gluttony personality, is none other than Reid Astrea himself.

“Wait, Reid is a Gluttony?! That’s insane!” and “Reid = Roy?! What does that even mean?!”

The Recapture Arc has spiraled into an uncontrollable situation, but viewers were thoroughly entertained: “This week’s shocking developments were so much fun!” The episode ended on yet another cliffhanger, leaving fans eager for more.

Episode 81 is scheduled for September 2. With only five episodes remaining, what kind of drama will unfold?
