Sekigahara Kassen no Hi and Samurai in Anime
September 15th is recognized as “Sekigahara Kassen no Hi,” or Battle of Sekigahara Day.
This significant day commemorates the Battle of Sekigahara, which occurred on Keichou 5, September 15th (October 21st, 1600, in the Gregorian calendar). This pivotal clash saw the Eastern Army, under the leadership of Tokugawa Ieyasu, emerge victorious against the Western Army, commanded by Ishida Mitsunari, marking a crucial turning point that led to the establishment of the Edo bakufu.
Anime, too, is rich with characters inspired by bushi and samurai. The appeal lies in the diverse portrayals: some works meticulously depict actual historical warlords, while others explore the image of samurai in captivating fantasy worlds, or even delve into profound human dramas featuring wandering swordsmen. This wide array of interpretations truly makes the genre fascinating.
