The full rerun of the anime Kimetsu no Yaiba aired the Mugen Ressha Hen third episode, ‘Hontou nara’ (If Only), on October 25, 2026. The episode plunged Kamado Tanjirou and the others into dreams created by Enmu, Lower One of the Twelve Kizuki, and it left viewers in tears when Kamado Rokuta called out to his older brother.
Spoiler warning: This article discusses events from the episode.
A dream mission with a cruel purpose
Based on Gotouge Koyoharu’s manga, Kimetsu no Yaiba follows Kamado Tanjirou after his family is killed by demons and his sister Nezuko is turned into a demon. The manga’s 23 Jump Comics volumes have surpassed 220 million copies in circulation. ufotable’s anime began in April 2019 with the Kamado Tanjirou Risshi Hen; the Hashira Geiko Hen aired from May 2024, and the Mugen Jou Hen film trilogy began with ‘Chapter 1: Akaza Sairai’ on July 18, 2025.
Enmu puts the Demon Slayers aboard the Mugen Ressha to sleep and plans to destroy their ‘spiritual core.’ Rengoku Kyoujurou, Agatsuma Zenitsu, Hashibira Inosuke, and Kamado Tanjirou are all pulled into deep sleep by Blood Demon Art. Their wrists are tied with ropes to the wrists of boys and girls acting under Enmu’s instructions.
Then everyone enters their dreams.
Zenitsu’s dream: a Nezuko date
Zenitsu is in high spirits, holding Kamado Nezuko’s hand. The two call each other ‘Nezuko-chan’ and ‘Zenitsu-san,’ laugh together, and leap across a river in one go. When Zenitsu carries Nezuko on his back, she does not even get wet. Viewers called it ‘full-blown delusion,’ ‘a date with Nezuko-chan,’ ‘Zenitsu is having a great dream,’ and ‘Zenitsu’s extremely convenient ufufu ahaha dream.’
Inosuke’s dream: cave expedition
Inosuke happily leads his ‘Tankentai! Tankentai! Ore-tachi doukutsu tankentai!’ (Expedition! Expedition! We’re the cave expedition!) with followers Ponjirou and Chuuitsu, plus a third follower, a rabbit-eared Nezuko. They challenge the master of the cave. Fans found it adorable and heartwarming, commenting ‘Too cute,’ ‘Kinda makes me feel warm inside lol,’ ‘So he really wants to be the boss,’ ‘A fun dream that suits Inosuke,’ and ‘Chaotic dream lol.’
Rengoku’s dream and the girl who enters it
Rengoku reports to his father that he has become a Hashira, but his father dismisses it: ‘Kudaran. Dou demo ii’ (Worthless. It doesn’t matter). Rengoku remembers the passionate father who raised him and tells his younger brother Senjurou honestly what their father said. He hugs Senjurou and says, ‘Let’s do our best with burning passion in our hearts.’ Fans sympathized: ‘Rengoku-san… that’s rough,’ ‘Even in the dream his old man is still twisted,’ ‘This Rengoku scene is painful,’ and ‘You wouldn’t want to dream of being insulted by your father with his back turned.’ Others commented on his father: ‘Even after becoming a Hashira, being able to retire safely without being killed by an Upper Rank is amazing,’ ‘He’s completely burned out,’ and ‘He used to be a good father.’
The rope connecting Tanjirou and the children lets Enmu’s special technique send the children into the target’s dreams. A girl enters Rengoku’s dream and runs to destroy his ‘spiritual core.’ If she destroys it, the dreamer will become a vegetable. She reaches the unconscious realm and finds Rengoku’s core, red like a flame. But as she tries to destroy it, the sleeping Rengoku puts his hand around her neck in reality, and the attempt fails. Viewers were impressed: ‘Rengoku can go into attack mode even unconsciously,’ ‘He’s a Hashira to the core…’
Tanjirou’s dream and Rokuta’s cry
In his dream, Tanjirou spends peaceful time with his gentle mother, lively younger brother, and cute younger sister. His mother bakes his favorite senbei. But when he goes to the river to fetch water for a bath, his reflection calls out, ‘Wake up!’ and ‘You’re being attacked! This is a dream! Wake up!’ Dream Tanjirou realizes that he is really inside the train. Fans praised the scene: ‘Tanjirou’s dream is so painful, I want him to wake up quickly,’ ‘I love the scene where Tanjirou urges Tanjirou on. Wake up!!’ ‘I got goosebumps the first time,’ and ‘It’s proof that he’s growing.’
To return to reality, Tanjirou suppresses his desire to stay and turns his back on his family. He says: ‘Honestly, if things had been normal, we should have been able to live like this. Here.’ ‘Honestly, everyone would still be healthy, and Nezuko would be in the sunlight, under the blue sky.’ ‘Honestly, honestly…’ Repeating ‘Honestly,’ Tanjirou starts to run. Then Kamado Rokuta, the youngest of the six Kamado siblings and the fourth son, shouts, ‘Onii-chan, oite ikanai de!’ (‘Big brother, don’t leave me behind!’)
Viewers flooded with tears: ‘I lost it at Rokuta here…,’ ‘I cried so hard here every time I thought I’d drown…,’ and ‘I think thank you so much, I think sorry so much. I really love this line from Tanjirou and cry every time.’
Cast comments from Takeo and Shigeru
The official Kimetsu no Yaiba account posts cast comments to mark each episode of the full rerun. This time, the comments came from Tanjirou’s two younger brothers.
Kamado Takeo is voiced by Taichi You, known for roles such as Dorothy in Princess Principal and Hoshino Kaoru in Kageki Shoujo!!. Taichi commented: ‘How much feeling did Tanjirou-nii carry, shake off the family chasing after him, and return to reality? The burden placed on his endlessly beautiful, pure white heart is immeasurable. It hurt my chest so much that I found myself in tears. Even if it was only a fleeting dream, as someone performing Takeo, I was very happy to see the family together. ‘Hontou nara’… I find myself repeating those words in my heart.’
Kamado Shigeru is voiced by Hondo Kaede, who plays Cure Mystic/Kobayashi Mikuru in the currently airing Meitantei Precure! and Maple (Honjou Kaede) in Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. Hondo commented: ‘If only they had lived happily as a family. If only, if only… It’s a painful episode, isn’t it? A terrible dream, isn’t it? Rokuta chasing after him so desperately made my chest tighten from the recording. I want to tell Tanjirou, who runs away without ever looking back, hardening his heart, ‘Don’t think you have to apologize.”

Father’s voice and a shocking choice
Tanjirou does not know how to wake up, and he panics because Rengoku and the others may also be trapped. Then he hears his father’s voice: ‘Tanjirou. Hold your blade. There is already something to cut.’ Tanjirou touches the Nichirin blade at his waist and says, ‘I think I understand. But if I’m wrong…’ Then he puts the blade to his own neck. Fans were stunned: ‘You can’t normally cut your own neck,’ ‘It’s hard to watch,’ ‘Tanjirou’s strength and the beauty of the unconscious realm make me cry every time,’ and ‘Even in a dream, being able to turn his blade on himself shows Tanjirou has tremendous mental strength.’
