The anime adaptation of Matsumoto Naoya’s Kaijuu 8-gou will conclude with Gekijouban Kaijuu 8-gou, set to open in 2027. The announcement came on October 24 at the solo event "Boueitai Boot Camp in Tachikawa" in Tachikawa City.
Alongside the film news, a super teaser visual was unveiled. It depicts an unidentified large kaijuu and a collapsed landscape, expressing an unprecedented threat.
From Shounen Jump+ hit to a film finale
Kaijuu 8-gou is serialized on Shueisha’s manga app Shounen Jump+ and has won numerous manga awards. The series has reached 16 volumes and surpassed 20 million cumulative domestic copies, including digital editions. Its popularity extends beyond Japan, with a large fanbase overseas, especially in North America.
The anime adaptation was produced by Production I.G and Studio Khara, a tag team on the scale of a major kaijuu. It began airing on the TV Tokyo network and other stations in April 2024, with real-time worldwide streaming on X. The second season finished in September 2025 while still drawing a major response. At the end of 2025, Jump Festa 2026 announced that a conclusion arc was in production. In September 2026, the original short anime "Narumi no Heijitsu" streamed on YouTube.
Teaser visual and the looming threat
The super teaser visual was drawn by Kimura Shinji, who also served as art director on the TV series. It shows the unknown large kaijuu and the collapsed landscape, conveying an unprecedented threat.
Kaijuu 9-gou absorbed Shinomiya Isao and flew away after leaving behind the words "The age of kaijuu begins." The image foreshadows the battle to come in the film: how will the Defense Force fight against Kaijuu 9-gou’s scheme?
Fukunishi Katsuyuki: "The work will finally conclude with the film in 2027"
Fukunishi Katsuyuki, who voices Hibino Kafka / Kaijuu 8-gou, shared a comment about the film. He noted that next year he will turn 32, the same age as Kafka, and said he feels a sense of fate in reaching the conclusion at this timing.
The film will depict the fates of the Defense Force members pushed into a corner by evolved kaijuu, Kaijuu 9-gou’s scheme, and how Kafka, now resolved to fight as Kaijuu 8-gou, will face the final battle.
